Needle phobia

MisterM
Community Member

Hi all,

I have this bad needle phobia, I can't watch another person getting injected, it makes me feel sick.
I also nearly fainted a few times when getting blood taken.
This is a problem more so now that I am considering going back to uni to study nursing.
A nurse I know said the field involves injecting patients.
Anyone here manage to overcome their needle phobia? If so, how?
Thank you.

Hi MisterM,

Yes, in my younger days I had a few phobias including needles (given to me). Others was fear of blood and my imagination running rampant. These were from my prison officer days when there were many things that challenged me that I cant go into detail.

Then one day I was due for a blood test, you know the worse needle- that which needs to find a vein. I decided to "suck it up princess" as my wife said. So I did. I flicked the brain switch and watched as the nurse did her technique.

I cant describe how it happened but since then needles have never bothered me, even when the nurse takes 4 or 5 goes at trying to find a vein.

Based on this I urge you to make your mind overpower your fear. Saying to yourself "don't be silly, its no worse than having a thorn extracted from my toe" and so on. I certainly sympathise with you because I think that those with sensitivity issues or mental struggles more often have these "phobias" and possibly less likely to drop them off.

Hope this helps.    Tony WK

Hi Tony,

Thanks for replying.
Wish I could do what you did to overcome it.
I can't even look at the needle when I am getting a flu shot or blood taken. I turn my head. I have to lie down as I always go white as a ghost and nearly faint.
I will try watch next time and talk to myself.
