Misophonia treatment?

Hello, I've seen a few posts in the search about misophonia and just wanted to introduce myself as another sufferer. I've had it since probably age 11 ish. I'm now 32 and am really keen to get some help with it.
I search google for treatment options but since I have not had much success getting help for depression through psychiatrists and psychologists I don't hold much hope that a great treatment program exists for this fairly newly discovered disorder.
Has anyone sought treatment? If so, what did you have to do and can you recommend a Dr or program? A main concern I have is that they'll offer exposure therapy and I really disagree that will help, otherwise I probably would have gotten over it by now! This coming from someone who has had social anxiety and saw great results with exposure therapy. But misophonia is different, I almost feel like I need a medication that will reduce stimulation in some part of my brain.
Thanks for reading!

Hi Tweleve12,
Welcome to the community here. I'd just like to mention that as part of the regulations and way this forum is run, we are not allowed to mention specific Drs names. Someone might be able to help you with a program though or suggestions of what has worked for them.
Can you please explain to me what misophonia actually is as I have not heard of this condition.
Sometimes we need to try a few psychiatrists and psychologists before we find people who are able to help us. I have found recently that by reading up on theories and strategies to help with depression, I am now understanding what the psychologist has been trying to teach me!
I seem to learn better when I have the information written down and not just told to me.
Cheers from Dools

I'm sorry that you suffer from this, but perhaps have a look at exposure therapy or it maybe called desensitisation which a psychologist may help you overcome this misophonia.
What I would do is contact as many psychologists as needed to see if they do actually perform these type of therapies.
It maybe possible to see if this is their major way to help those concerned.
My best wishes.
Geoff.
