Is this my anxiety talking?

Hey Everyone,

I would just like some perspective on an issue I have been having and asking what strategies others have when this thought process occurs.

So I have been living with my partner and his family for a bit between renting while we find our own place and I’m excited to move out and have my own place but then when I think about moving I get anxious and get scared of moving out because I fear I will feel worse or more alone not living with other people? Same goes for things like organising a camping trip or something I don’t follow through organising because it makes me anxious but on the other hand I really want all of these things? So I’m confused haha

is this just the nature of anxiety? it just fears the unknown and wants to make me feel like the worst could happen so it stops me from doing these things?

and if so what strategies can I use to over come these struggles?

thanks for all the help 🙏

Hi jess b,

It sounds like you've got some things going on that would make anyone a little tense - moving house is one of the most stressful things we can do, and I think it's fair to say that anyone who has to move feels a little aroused by the prospect - perhaps even anxiousness is a very common experience also.

Do you normally have anxiety? If so, then you're in the best position to decide whether these responses are in line with how your anxiety affects you. One thing I will say on this is your situation sounds like one where we might expect anxiety to peak, so perhaps using strategies to manage our anxiety in these situations is called for.

One of the things I believe is fool proof in managing peaking anxiety is exercise. Getting some vigorous exercise into our day every other day or so really helps with burning off excess adrenaline and cortisol - the two chemicals that we likely have an oversupply of as a result of our aroused state cause by anxiety. A really good run up and down the street, a long bike ride, a power-lifting session in the gym, a solid hour of one - on - one basketball - whatever blows your hair back; vigorous exercise is the best medicine in my opinion for reducing the symptamology of mental health.

Couple this with some breathing exercises (check out the 'smiling mind' app!), and we've got a solid, all round management tool for when the anxiety creeps up on us! It's not a cure, but it helps us remain balanced rather than overwhelmed.

How has your anxiety affected you in the past? What things have you done to mitigate its toll on your life?

Hope to hear from you soon.

Hey Here I am,

Thank you for taking the time to respond to me I very much appreciate that! I have suffered from anxiety for quite some time and have always had a firm grasp on it but I think lately It has become a bit more scary and intrusive and I sometimes struggle with disassociating myself with it! You are very right with exercise I do try and fit it in every day at least some form of it and it does help!!
I’ve been using the headspace app for meditating when I feel myself in the thick of it but I think I have to remember my strength and not let it win and even though it scares me or makes me uncomfortable I can push through I think I’m on here sharing because I would like to connect with people on their strategies in dealing with it when it rears it’s head!

thanks again I hope your day is wonderful 🙂
