I used to have depression years ago. The depression lifted but I still have anxiety that causes me lots of trouble. i don't get panic attacks but there are things that set of me off. I pretty much have a list of things that I know will cause me to get upset. Can anyone recommend a service that I can access with a health care card / medicare card at low or no cost (im unemployed). I don't want to go on medication but would rather attack the root of the problem itself. Thanks.

Hi geekgirl0000,

I think you should talk to your G.P. for options, or even Medicare direct. The government won't throw free stuff at you but if you are entitled, they will tell you about it if you ask.

Kind regards, John.

Hey Geekgirl!

OK you can go to a local GP and request a "Mental health care plan" this will allow you with a referral to a psychologist for 10 free sessions per year. Also making an appointment to speak to a social worker at centrelink can also help as the social worker will be able to refer you to other services and give you assistance when it comes to establishing connections in the community.

I have an advocate which is a person whom I have given rights to access any information required to assist me so she is able to contact services and this helps me greatly.

Another thing you can do is head into a place like Relationships Australia or a Community Health Centre who have councillors and psychologists who work for free.

Best of luck 🙂
