Help for my daughter

Please help, my daughter has been dealing with intrusive thoughts for the past 3 weeks, she’s seen a psychologist but is really not coping well. She managed to get to school last week, only because she ‘bargained’ with the thoughts but now she can’t go to school, is an absolute mess, crying, inconsolable, is telling me the thoughts are real now and this is her life, she needs them to stop - I don’t know what to do.

Hi Cat 21,

Welcome to the Beyond Blue Forums. I'm so sorry to hear that your daughter is going through a difficult time at the moment. I also can hear how distressing this is for you and I can imagine you just want to help her feel better.

Is it okay to ask a little more about the intrusive thoughts your daughter is having - whether the thoughts are centring around something specific or if it is a general sense of anxiety? It sounds like this may be something that has only developed in the past few weeks.

I think it's important to mention that what helps one person with their anxiety might not work for another. Mindfulness and meditation could be helpful for your daughter to quiet worrying thoughts and gain a sense of calm. There are mindfulness/meditation apps that can be downloaded onto a mobile device so they can be accessed at any time. Counselling sessions could be another way for your daughter to get some strategies to manage the anxious thoughts, so it's great that she has seen a psychologist already. Do you feel the sessions are helpful for her? It sounds like she may already be using some strategies, like "bargaining" with the anxious thoughts.

I also hope that you are getting the time to look after yourself as well throughout this difficult time.

Looking forward to hearing from you if you would like to reply.

- Marie (:
