Desperately need advice

Hi everybody,

I’ve been going through a rough patch for the past 3 months. I’ve had problem after problem and haven’t had a break. I’ve been pro active and have been seeing a psychologist which has helped but I’ve still been experiencing constant overwhelming anxiety and stress. I’ve been sleeping max 4 hours per night and feel like I’m chronically stressed and anxious. I feel like My flight or fight is activated more than it’s not.

6 weeks ago I was lying in bed and got really bad heart palpitations which lead me to the hospital as I thought it was a heart attack ( I got cleared )
A week later I had digestive issues which were quite bad which lead me to think I had colon cancer. This lead to 3 hospital visits, blood tests & colonoscopy / gastroscopy (everything came back clear)
I then ended up having really bad back and stomach pain so I got a CT scan & x-ray (everything came back clear)

And for the past 2 weeks I’ve been getting severe body twitches & spasms that have had no mercy (especially in both my calf muscles) these twitches are basically from morning to night which also gives me really tight calf muscles and of course, now I’m really worried about that.

I’ve spoken to my Dr and he told me it’s anxiety. For the past week I’ve been taking magnesium, trying to sleeping better and trying to minimise stress and it’s not getting better so my question is -

Has anyone else experienced muscle twitching & spasms consistently ? I’m really anxious and would love to know if anybody has also experienced persistent body twitching. And can anxiety really cause these symptoms ?

Dear Anthony_a,

Welcome to the forums. I'm sorry to hear of your anxiety.

I have anxiety too and while I haven't had muscle twitches, it's entirely possible that anxiety can cause it. As you've discovered over the weeks, anxiety can affect different parts of your body - from your digestion to your heart to aches and pains. I've also had breathing difficulties which were terrifying until I learnt how to manage my anxiety.

The thing about anxiety is that it's often the cause of these physical symptoms, yet our anxiety over these physical symptoms often makes the anxiety worse, which means more physical symptoms. It's like a never-ending cycle, unless we consciously break it.

You've taken a great step in seeing a psychologist. To supplement your psychologist visits, I can suggest the following:

  1. Acceptance: It sounds insignificant, but you need to fully accept that your symptoms are anxiety-related before you can control them. This means that when you feel a physical symptom, try not to let yourself spiral into wondering what disease you have. Rather, accept that you are feeling anxious and that your body has been through a lot because of that anxiety.
  2. Mindfulness & Relaxation: I use an app called Smiling Mind to help me control my anxiety. Once you're able to accept that your physical symptoms are a result of anxiety, you can work on managing the anxiety. Relax your body and practice mindfulness. You can also try some yoga (just 15mins of it in the morning can make a huge difference to your mood). Keep at it because it will take some time before you feel your physical symptoms lessening (it was a week or two for me).
  3. Practice: You need to continue managing that anxiety because it can come back. This could mean doing a daily mindfulness exercise, or daily morning yoga. Personally, a mindfulness exercise every night before I sleep helps a lot.

I hope this helps.

Kindly,
M

Hi Anthony.

well done on being proactive. Getting help sooner rather than later does a lot for you.

I’m not a doctor, but i did come across something a while back. Have a look into restless leg syndrome. It can be the cause of the of some of your symptoms. If you are worried, or want more info, speak to your GP.

My anxiety has introduced some minor facial tiks from time to time. And the chest pain making me think im having a heart attack - fugetaboutit!

for the anxiety, i do recommend CBT and ACT as these can change our mindset.
