Beginner teacher anxiety

Hello,

I am a first year teacher and already feel burnt out and overwhelmed by teaching. I am at a pretty rough school and have some tough classes, and more often than not I am feeling anxious and panicked when I leave a lesson. I am constantly in a place where I know what I need to do in theory but it just doesn’t work when I try it. I am left feeling like I am not good enough for the job and often go home freaking out about what had happened that day, what that kid said to me, how my lesson didn’t go to plan. I know that I am just starting out and am still learning the ropes, but it is hard to not feel discouraged. I just want to be good at my job and I don’t think I am. I wonder if I am alone in this feeling and am not sure how to process this going forward. Is it just me? Thanks for listening.

Hi there,

Thank you for sharing so honestly with us, it takes real strength to speak up, especially when you’re feeling burnt out and full of self-doubt. Starting out as a teacher is such a big transition, and it’s incredibly common to feel exactly as you’re describing overwhelmed, discouraged, and questioning yourself.

Teaching in a tough school, managing complex classes, and trying to apply all the theory under real-life pressure is a huge ask. The anxiety and panic you’re experiencing after lessons is not a sign of failure, it’s often a sign that you care deeply and are trying your best in a very demanding environment.

You're not alone in this. So many new (and even experienced) teachers struggle with these feelings, but it doesn’t always get spoken about. What you’re going through is valid, and it’s okay to seek support for yourself as you navigate this. You deserve to feel resourced and supported, not just professionally, but emotionally too.

You might find it helpful to reach out to our Beyond Blue Support Service, available 24/7 on 1300 22 4636 or via webchat. Just having someone to talk through these feelings with can make a real difference.

You’re doing more than you think, and just by reaching out here, you’re already showing incredible self-awareness and care for your wellbeing. Please keep talking with us — you’re not alone.

Take care,
Sophie M
