I joined the RAAF in 1973 and was trained in the use of gas masks and actions to take if a nuclear war came about.

I've mixed with Vietnam Veterans and had family members in WW2.

I've kept watch as a keen observer of the "recent" wars- Serbia, Iraq and Afghanistan. However, all the yelling and threats from some countries has always fizzled out at a certain point. My point is that Russia's mention of using whatever force is necessary does not means it will result in a nuclear exchange. If it did then imo Russia would lose as USA, UK, Germany and France is too powerful as a united force. The real worry is the devastation and human survival. Yes, these are issues to worry about but are highly unlikely. We must embrace the concept of "highly unlikely" not fall into the trap of catastrophising.

That's my take on this war or any other.

Perspective is indeed important.

I just want to say that what you have said has really helped bring me back to reality. It's certainly calming to get the perspective of someone with military experience and a long standing interest in conflicts. And I'm sure there have been an awful lot of lessons learned from all the incidents in the past. Experts make plans for all sorts of scenarios, based on these very instances.

It's easy for me to forget that I felt a very similar way during the North Korea crisis a few years back - which of course involved a leader who is considerably more brutal and authoritarian than Putin - as well as the fact that I made a promise to myself that the next time something like that happens I wouldn't get all stressed out...better said than done I guess XD.

I hope all this helps Kate out, too 🙂

Thanks Tony your post is very grounding. 😊

Hi op

yeah, me to, even well well before Ukraine but that alone is just the safest thing. My partner has family there too, so you can only imagine how things have been.

But aus has also been scaring the hell out of me. The pm and sidekick we have here atm..and the hard n cold foreign minister, won't use names or it'll prob just b deleted, have zero tact and incredibly just plain dangerous mouths.

Look at the French thing, look at how they up and grandstanded about China and Cocid , which is what started all that. There was no need for that, we're a tiny country, but they insist on trying to act like world leaders. That alone just showed zero nous and smarts- there was no need they could've just agreed with other countries later, not go out on a limb alone . There are so many things China yeah l've said something needs to be done in Aus a long time now, but even that is only about what they allow- they can do all that without grandstanding and picking fights. And the French deal. The sheer just total disrespect and utter lack of tact , was just mind blowing. And the way they've China talked 2yrs now , the words they've used , the suggestiveness , again just shows just a total lack of comprehension and reprecautions.l am truly ashamed , and it's provoking the kind of fears any of us with any perception at all are now feeling, and it's all totally unnecessary. Even Ukraine , our clowns were out there announcing sanctions24hrs ahead of the rest of the world or UK and US. It all just shows such a total lack of, it's mind boggling.

l don't even remember a more dangerous Government so yeah you bet , l feel anxious alright.

ps , very sorry that was obviously meant to say the "saddest" thing.

l can't believe the difference one wrong letter can make with computers and posts.

Hello Kate, Doberman and everyone else, insane people threaten and use nuclear power as a weapon of threat, N Korea have tested nukes over the ocean, but know that any war using nukes would probably exterminate even the leader Putin and eliminate millions of helpless people, because he knows this threat would involve powerful other countries.

What we are told on the news bulletins is nothing compared to what the governments are talking about, and remember COVID, the government kept changing their mind on more occasions than usual.

If you are suffering from any type of depression then your mind is going to think negatively, that's what this illness does, and as in life, we don't know what's going to happen now or in 2 days time, so what these o/s leaders say may only be hot air, you can't believe everything they say.

Geoff.
