Feeling Detached

I am 18 years old and have been suffering from anxiety and panic attacks since I can remember. I am on medication for it but I find when I am put out of my comfort zone, especially being away from home or being away from my mum, my anxiety becomes out of control

Recently I have been feeling very detached from reality and not with it, I feel like I dont know whats going on and I am scared that I am going to forget whats real or go crazy. I want to know if anyone else has suffered from these feelings, is this normal for me to feel like this ? My mind feels fuzzy and not right, Its really scaring me.

Hi ScaredBetty,

Firstly, welcome to the forums.

I am also an anxiety sufferer and have had panic/anxiety attacks before as well so I know the feelings, anxiety has many symptoms and feeling detached is more than likely one of them, I haven't had that feeling per say but had many others, I went through a stage where if I was alone, I would freak out and needed to be around family or friends, so I can see how you would feel that way when away from your mum. Your safe zone is your mum and your mind relates to being around you mum as being safe and protected.

You say you are on medication which means you have seen a GP, have you also spoken to a psychologist about your anxiety? They really do help.

Please also know you can call the Beyond Blue helpline on 1300 22 4636 24/7 to discuss anything you are feeling.

My best for you,

Jay

Hello ScaredBetty

Jay (BballJ) is spot on above as he has the experience and knowledge especially in regard to your GP/Counselor

I have had anxiety for a few years now and have experienced the same feelings as you do Betty. They are awful and not a good place to be in. I understand where you are coming from.

The feeling of detachment and the fuzzy mind sound very familiar

The Good News......Anxiety symptoms do decrease over time with super regular therapy and Good on you for being on the meds as anxiety is partially physical which makes it similar to diabetes or a bad virus.

Like Jay said above your GP/Counselor is the best way towards having some peace in your life Betty.

The meds are important as they provide us with a platform on which we can heal using frequent counseling or even seeing your GP for support combined.

You are amazing for having the strength to post the way you have Betty 🙂

Jay above mentioned if you have a counselor. Even if you dont your GP has a ton of knowledge about anxiety and can be a huge help to you......especially if you make the visits really frequent.

I hope you can post back with your thoughts

my best for you

Paul
