I have been battling with depression and anxiety for nearly nine years now, I turn 21 this year and I am so scared that what I go through isn't going to get any better!

I'm sure you will be fine, think about the good things in life have a big party or get together and have fun, hoping that this year will be the best year of your life. Also realise that there are people out there that will care and comfort you.
I hope you feel better and have a good 21st!

Hi Lotus it must have taken a lot of courage to reach out here & I admire you for being so brave. It's the question we all ask ourselves at times - "Will I get better". First things-have you looked at the list of GPs on this website? They all specialise in depression etc & have undertaken intensive training by beyond blue. I'd recommend starting with the GP. Secondly Beyond Blue also has a list of highly trained Pyschologists and under Medicare you get 12 visits with a Pyschologist. Would you like me to look these up for you if your feeling fragile? Of course it would be anonymous I'd just need state & postcode & ill look some up if that helps. Depression can be treated with the right help-GETTING the right help is the important part. If there's anything else I can do to support you on here just ask & it will be done. Have a think about the options I've suggested. Lve Mares x

Hi lotus. I had to reply to your post cause it could have been me 21 years ago if I'd been as mature & "switched on" as you are. I am now 41. Was diagnosed 10 years ago following the birth of my eldest child. They called it post natel depression, but once I started treatment & could think rationally, I realized I had been suffering on & off since I was a teenager. Listen to Mares & take the advice re seeing a recommended dr & therapist. I wish I had of when I was your age. Would have saved me making a lot of mistakes & pain. Good luck xx

dear Lotus, would like to welcome you to the site.
One of the main problems that most of us have experienced is that at first we deny our depression and think that it will just go away by itself, but this never happens, and our depression becomes much worse to the point where you are now, but fortunately you have realised that after nine years of torture that you do have depression, it's not having a bad day, or a bad period, it's some illness that has attached itself to you.
Your just a young adult with so many prospects to look forward to, but it's impossible to do anything because this illness has confined you to bed, probably sleeping most of the day, while most of your friends are racing ahead with their careers, hobbies and girl/boyfriends, so this really upsets you, because you have no desire to do anything.
This is where you need professional help, starting with your GP, who will begin the road to recovery, it's not going to be easy for you, and there's no point for me to say that it will easy, because that would be lying to you, and on this site honesty is the key function for all of us.
At the moment it's very important to seek help, and I'm not sure if you have any, but please let us know.
The other point that I would like to make is that people your age or even younger come to this site for help, advice and suggestions, but for some reason they become scared, and I really wished that this wouldn't happen, because we are just a bunch of people who have gone through exactly what you are going through, so all we want to do is help you. Geoff.
