Joining ADF after having mental problems in the past

Hi,

I have searched the forum, and found one thread about this topic, but it didn't answer to my question.

Does anyone know if there are any specific mental health conditions that disqualify on the spot to join the defence forces?

18 years ago I had a serious case of breakdown, but I was never hospitalized, managed to sort the issue on my own and was never on medication. The situation back then did not affect me finishing studies, getting and keeping job, having family, or fulfilling any daily life duties.

Only last year I decided to have couple of sessions with psychologist to help sort out, what was going on, and get on track why certain situation kicked me off balance for a short period of time. But since I did some research on that, quite a bit of "homework", am able to recognize my triggers and regulate emotions well, I was wondering if this past case of imbalance and need of some support last year would be an obstacle in getting to ADF?

Hi gucia6!

I can't say for sure but from what I have heard when you disclose mental health usually ADF and NSW Police will book in a verbal interview with you to understand what you went through and how you are coping now. Everyone's story and experiences are different so I hope they give you a chance! In saying that I am unsure exactly what they would do but it sounds like you have a lot of insight with regards to being able to recognize your triggers and regulate your emotions.

I'm sorry I couldn't be of more help but I think it's very important to be honest and be yourself!

Got a funny feeling that a history of mental health disqualifies people from holding a weapons licence and the ADF might mean weapons training. But if your healthy and there is nothing that proves you had a mental health wobble then go for it. But you will have to lie, but who doesn't bull a bit when getting a job. Good luck
