Hi everyone im new here and am trying to reach out in hope ppl feel the same as me. Im 18 in a week and have so much to look forward to yet, i constantly feel scared of everything for no reason and my brain just won't shut up, im scared of going crazy or something happening to me. I feel numb and wish I had clarity back. I refuse to take antidepressants as I only like natural supplements. I don't know what to do it's as if i cant calm my self down and im terrified constantly that something is going to happen to me, does anyone feel like this?

Dear HanLily

Hello and welcome to Beyond Blue. It's good to hear from you.

May I ask, have you just left school? What are you doing at the moment? Life after school is very different and it's natural to feel a little scared about the world. I doubt very much that you are going crazy though I do understand why you feel that way. If you are depressed, having your brain running at a million miles an hour is quite normal.

Have you been to your GP and been prescribed antidepressants? There's nothing wrong with antidepressants. Like many other medications, they originally come from plants etc growing naturally. For example take antibiotics, originally mould growing on rotting vegetation. Aspirin was derived from the bark of the willow tree. I know these medications are chemically made now but their origin was in nature.

And they can help us a great deal more than herbal mixtures. Why not talk to your doctor about antidepressants and understand how they work. After all, what have you got to lose? You will start to feel better, manage your life better, and they are not addictive.

I also suggest you look at the the Kids Helpline. It has been set up for people up to the age of 25 and employs staff experienced in talking with young people. The web address is www.kidshelpline.com.au They have a help phone line which is available 24/7 1800 55 1800  You can also contact Headspace, National Youth Mental Health Foundation www.headspace.org.au  Their phone number, available 24/7, is 1800 650 890

On both web sites you will find heaps of information and activities.

In the meantime, can you tell us a little about yourself? Do you live at home, are there any siblings, do you go to uni or work? We are interested in learning about you so that we can help as much as possible. I hope you reply soon.

Hi Hanlily

Thankyou for having the courage to post

Mary just posted something that is important and wise....."There's nothing wrong with antidepressants. Like many other medications, they originally come from plants etc growing naturally"

You are smart enough to use the word 'Clarity'.....Good on You! I can hear from what you have posted that your mind is racing. That is very common as well as the fear of going crazy too. I used to have really bad anxiety and I thought I was going 'crazy' as well. It was awful

The good news?....You arent going to go crazy Hanlily...And please reply if you wish more detail on this..no worries at all

I love natural remedies and have always been against antidepressants...but like Mary just said they are actually derived from nature in the first place anyway.

Mary has given you some really helpful links that can help. However, if you arent up to it right now we are here for you.

I am so glad that I actually decided to start taking antidepressants. They can really give you a platform on which you can improve and get better!

It would be great if you wish to get back to us. I know Mary feels the same way

Kind Thoughts

Speak soon I hope!

Paul

Hi Hanlily,

I am new here too and still working my way through all the excellent resources available here, it took a lot for me to write my first post so I am well aware of how hard that first step is. I have been made to feel very welcome here and well supported by others who are experiencing similar issues, please be reassured that you have come to the right place...you are among friends here 🙂
