Can anyone please tell me how this medication works. Or your experience while taking SSRI. Thanks.

dear Wittnall, I have been taking a SSRI AD for over 20 years now as I was given many different types beforehand, but the side effects were too many, loss of sexual drive or being able to have an ***********, being nauseated, loss of taste in food and couldn't eat and most of these AD's were SNRI, but every one is different.

The doctors have to weigh in what other medications you are taking but they don't know what AD will be the best for you.

Most have their favourite AD and will certainly try these first, because many years ago they were given 'kick-backs' from the company, whether this still happens today I don't know.

My Dad who was a GP used to get these kick backs from the rep.

What these drugs do are that they affect certain brain circuits and the chemicals (called neurotransmitters) that pass along signals from one nerve cell to another in the brain. These chemicals include serotonin, dopamine, and norepinephrine.

According to a medical website ' Unfortunately, it's not that simple. We really don't know what causes depression or how it affects the brain. We don't exactly know how antidepressants improve the symptoms', however AD's are prescribed to people with depression and that most seem to work for them.

This SSRI I was given was to help with my depression and it's supposed to also help with my anxiety which has caused me to have OCD for such a long time, and whether it has helped with my OCD is debatable as I still do them.

It also took awhile for this AD to start to work, but once I had overcome depression with maybe the help of this particular AD has kept me free from depression, however I have had relapses but they last only a couple of days.

I would be really interested in knowing how awful your depression is, and how long you have suffered. Thanks Geoff.

hi witnal,

everyone experiences different ssris differently but I always think the most CRUCIAL advice to someone who is starting them is that the first month is nothing like what you will experience later on.

My experience with ssris is that the first month is worse than the symptoms i had before. It can be confusing and feel like your in a dream world, forgetting what day it is and so on. Your brain is re-circuiting and you might feel a bit all over the place and like it is not working. Keep in constant contact with someone who can support you, a doctor, professional, family member or anything. It can be very dangerous for you to be in such a vulnerable position but I find once I pull through the first month I can't believe how easy life can be! (have been off and on ssris a few times)

Hope you go well, and dont give up hope. Like i said, I have been off and on AD's for a few years, it takes a while to figure out what suits YOU best.

I've just been diagnosed with depression, social anxiety, general anxiety, post traumatic stress, and ocd. I'm finding this really difficult to accept. There are probably a few more things going on as well including being suicidal. I've come out of 24 years of abuse, violence, and being horribly violated by him, with him since l was 17. Every day with him was about surviving, he abused me 14 months ago.... I've steadily deteriorated since then. I thought l could get through this by myself, without help. I don't deserve help this is my punishment for being so worthless. I don't want to be medicated or help myself....

Hi Geoff,

If you go to the post Despair please care..... In the trauma section you will hopefully understand what is going on. I would also appreciate your support and input.

EVERYONE is worth something, and you especially. To survive something like that takes an amazing kind of person. The world needs people like you to show there is hope for everyone! I know you can't believe it right now but please just hold on that little bit longer and try to think positively. You inspire me and I'm sure soon you will inspire many others.
Some days I don't want to take my medication or look after myself either, but then I think how much happier the people in my life are when I am well.

I am seriously so proud and amazed that you sought help and battled through. Keep it up, never give up! The only way to fail is to never try.

How have you found the ssris?

Hi gremz

Thanks for the kind words, unfortunately l haven't managed to take the SSRI,  still scared of being medicated. My husband used the fact that he was medicated as an excuse for the horrific things he did to me. I was stupid enough to believe him.

That makes perfect sense Wittnal and dont get yourself down about the past. Love makes us blind, not stupid. Take your time to take everything in. Let me know how they go if you do try them.
