Hi there,

just curious is there medication out there for woman who are pregnant and have anxiety ? I'm trying my hardest to not go down that path I'm currently doing cognitive based therapy at the moment and I think I'm feeling a little overwhelmed this week and the tools I've learnt from this therapy isn't working as much but I'm trying to stay open minded to other ways of treatment 😄 any feedback would be most helpful

Hey sweety.

I dont have depression, just anxiety which triggers nausea, vomitting, lack of appetite and the good old heart pulpitations. They are the main ones anyway.

I know the medication isnt working as well as it was before I found out I was pregnant. Obviously hormones are playing a big part but Im hoping it settles soon. I HOPE!

Hi Ace, good on you for doing the therapy work now to try and deal with the anxious thoughts during your pregnancy.

If you get swamped and you feel you may need to resort to medications , there are ones you can use later on in your pregnancy that have not been shown to cause issues for your baby. Similarly , there are SSRI’s that have been approved for breast feeding.

I suggest you talk to your GP or obstetrician about this . If necessary , they can call the Royal Woman’s Hospital or RCH pharmacy dept (whilst you are with them) and double check the meds that are considered safe. I have found this to be very reassuring for patients as they are getting access to the most up to date info from the best source !

In the meantime, continue with CBT, mindfulness, regular exercise, healthy diet, regular sleep , and generally being kind to yourself.
