Hi,
I've started my first SSRI 6 weeks ago. Amongst other normal side effects I've had two odd experiences too.
Withn the first 3 or so weeks I closed my eyes in bed (still very awake) and I watched my face turn into a horse. It was very vivid. I opened my eyes, it went away, closed my eyes and my face started morphing into the horse again.
Then last week, again awake, eyes closed in bed and I was watching labradors running around a field.
Has anyone else experienced similar? will these just wear off the longer i'm on the SSRI?
Ta

Hi trailrunner,
I have had a similar experience too! Just recently I have been on a higher does of my SNRI, since the higher does, once I'm in bed but still awake I sometimes hear like a rushing white noise and I can snap out of it easily once I realised I was hearing it.
Also when I close my eyes I got visuals they were not nice, quite creepy! Scary faces morphing into wierd blackness and trippy colours. They were scary
This has only happen a couple of times but it was since I increased my med dosage (My Gp's suggestion)

Hi TrailRunner,
Welcome. This is a great topic to bring up about on the forum. In my experience side effects to medication is discussed far to little when in reality people can be impacted by side effects quite frequently. In regards to your odd experience of hallucinations I would recommend a few things. First off I would try to remember these experiences and recall all the events surrounding them ie. what you ate, how you were feeling, any other medications taken that day etc.
I would then go to your GP and discuss the side effect experiences in detail. Your GP may do a medication review with you and look at your dose etc. Having detailed information on hand about the experiences will be helpful so your GP has the whole picture.
As with any side effect, it is important to discuss them with your GP so you can look at strategies to reduce their impact as well as track their occurrence. It is possible that others have experienced something similar on the beyondblue forums and this can be helpful to have someone to share in the experience. But is also important to seek some medical advise in relation to this hallucination type event so you can better understand if it is medication related. Keep us posted on your progress.
Wishing you the best possible outcome,
Nurse Jenn

Thanks for the Replies Jenn and Lilly.
I've mentioned it to my doc (the face morphing one) and we didn't change anything - then i saw the Labradors.
I'm only on the starting dose of my SSRI..
Was just posting to see if i was the only one, or if anyone knew the real term for these types of visual hallucinations. I will be seeing the GP in 2 weeks and my psychologist this week.
