Walking Shoes - Walking and Other Exercise

Hey to anyone reading this.

Last night I had an idea about starting a new thread about exercise especially walking. I am aware that walking is very beneficial for our mental, emotional and physical well being. And by actually doing it....well it can make a huge difference to how we cope with the storms that we face in life.

OK, I am not real good at disciplining myself to walk, and have to really push myself to do it. And sometimes it is even hard to leave this bedroom. Anyway I am not a beginner walker, as I have stuck to sort of a plan before. So I know that it does make me feel somewhat better. But I only stayed on the plan for a couple of months, then gave up.....for whatever reason. So here I am again wanting desperately to not fail this time.

So I guess this thread is for anyone that does walk, anyone that is struggling to walk because of depression or anxiety issues. And anyone else really......

I am unsure of the outcome of all this. But my ideas included: Sharing about things we have found out about exercise especially about walking. Writing down the reasons that one would chose to walk ( like something to help motivate). Being accountable in same way. Sharing about the places where we actually do walk, like the beach, gym, around the block, with the dog, out to the clothesline and back. And any other useful tips that could help others. So here we go......

Hi Everyone,

Shelley, Thanks for thinking of me. The miniature Tudor village is cute. I remember seeing it as a child after coming to Australia. I haven't been to the State Library. Were you on holiday in Melbourne? You sound much better than you were a few weeks ago which is great. You ate doing well with the gym!!!

Dools, I'm glad you are slowly improving & doing what you can to help yourself recover. Make sure you watch were you are going so you don't bump into anyone!!!! (just joking)

I went overseas for 2 weeks and I am still getting over the jet lag & fatigue from the long flights. We cruised round the bottom of Sth America. I tried to walk around the decks & used the stair rather than the lift. I also did dancing lessons including Argentine Tango which was fun. When in port we often did long walks exploring the area so I kept up my exercise. I have tried to walk since coming home but didn't walk as much as normal due to tiredness. Today I dropped my husband off at the station & then drove to the 1000 steps (a popular track in the Dandenongs). Often it is too crowded with people running up & down but today was OK. I made it up & down without being too exhausted so I was happy with myself. The last few times I went I really struggled to walk the distance so I must have improved.

Hi Shelly,

HIIT = Basically you go flat out doing some painful exercise, (burpees, jump squats, sprints etc), for a set time, (say 18 seconds), then you get a 5 second rest. Rinse / repeat. Usually changing exercises/time frames. It is intense.

Metafit is the one I do. Look on youtube.

Chae.

Thanks heaps for that Chae, I watched a few on youtube. I understand now what it is. It doesn't look like you would get bored of it does it?

Evening all,

Mrs D you are sounding a bit better. Did you end up making that wind chime out of sticks? And did you walk to the post office and op shop? One can find some good bargains in an op shop.

Hi Elizabeth, you are back.... Did you enjoy your time away, apart from the things you mentioned on your new thread? That's a bit different walking on the decks of a cruise ship. That sounds heavenly. Even good ocean air sounds great to me. Ah you said you were going to do dancing a while back. And now you have done it. I am glad you had some fun Elizabeth, it makes life much more interesting.

And yes we just traveled down along the south Coast all the way to Melbourne. It was a bit of a holiday. Quite special because we don't often go away from our place.

Well I just went along to the gym again today. So glad I did.

I'm glad you enjoyed your drive down to Melbourne. We are thinking of doing the opposite heading north up the east coast probably in Autumn when it isn't too hot. I like walking around the decks. Sometimes there is a gentle breeze & the gentle sway of the ship is relaxing. I like watching the waves formed from the ship & the sunset. I love glaciers, fiords, mountains etc. Other times it is invigorating (cold, hard work) as you walk against the wind particularly at the front of the ship. A few days deck 7 (where I walked) was closed due to wind & sometimes waves crashing over the side. Unfortunately my husband was worried about getting sick if he got cold so he didn't like walking outside when it was cooler & windy. I now have to sort out photos. Culling the excess, labelling them & then I will make a photo book. I do that rather than buy souvenirs.

Oh no never bored.

Bit sore and tired but never bored.

Today I walked with my husband to the hospital for an appointment. We walked up the steps & along the ridge to get there & then back the same way except going home means going up very steep road & then steps to get to the ridge. There is a shorter way. My husband complained he would be tired for his appointment but then insisted on going back the long way. I also walked to the supermarket rather than driving so I got a decent amount of walking done.

Yesterday I didn't walk. I went with my daughter to her new investment property to help with the garden We planted plants along the fenceline & layed mulch. I have a bad cold so decided that was enough physical activity for the day. After spending time with my other daughter who lives nearby & my grandkids we returned home. It was a nice day except for feeling sick & tired. On the drive my daughter started talking about the past so I asked her what she thought of her growing up & what she appreciated. She spoke about how her dad never earnt much yet we still had great holidays often camping in free campsites. She appreciated learning to save from a young age which meant that she now has her own home and an investment property (with mortgages of course) and still can afford holidays because she doesn't waste money on unnecessary things. She was glad she was taught to do lots of things for herself & noticed how much harder it was for her friends who hadn't been taught those practical things. It was nice to know that we had succeeded in bringing her up with values we thought were important & had taught her the essential things to be able to have a good adult life.

Today I'm going to try & rest to allow myself to recover so I can get back to normal sooner I hope

I need to remember walking instead of always doing the higher intensity stuff like today, plus gardening....

Elizabeth

your daughter sounds similar to me although I've not invested beyond my own home... too scary!!! 🙂

enjoy your rest

Hi Chae, Elizabeth, Mrs D, Taurus and anyone else reading.

Chae, just so you know, I had a bit of a read of a thread of yours plus a few posts of yours in Kaz bipolar thread. I just wanted to get to know something more about you. Hope you don't mind? So yeah I found out a little.... You mentioned you did boxing a few posts back. Is that fun? I watched some other girls/women in the gym doing some sort of boxing. They were wearing boxing gloves and punching into a pair of padded flat sort of mits/ pads on the other person's hands. Is that what you do? And do you have a garden at your place there?

Hi Elizabeth, my mum has asked me similar things as you asked your daughter. One practical chore that I did frequently whilst growing up and that sticks out to me, was sweeping a very long concrete driveway with a broom. Good exercise too. We didn't have any blower or vacuum to suck up the leaves. Did you feel much encouraged by the words you daughter said about her time growing up?

Ah that is great you are coming up along the east coast in Autumn. Do you know how far you will come up? And that invigorating feeling you mentioned feeling whilst walking on deck in the cold. There is nothing like feeling invigorated is there? It helps one feel very alive, fresh, alert and awake. Love it.

Well yesterday I went along to the gym, I managed to do 20 minutes on the cross trainer. That is all I could do, as I was feeling like I had no energy to move. Like muscles just didn't want to move. On Friday I walked with my sister around the water reservoir. We talked so much I couldn't remember much of the scenery around me, as I was focusing on what she was saying. However we did see a few tiny birds, darting into the air and making swoops all around. They looked so care free and like they loved just it. On Thursday, well we walked around a cemetery that had some beautiful loving messages written on old stone. I am not sure if I like walking in cemeteries or not......
