From everything to nothing

Hi all, I hope you’re all doing well. A few months back, my then partner decided to call me out of the blue and end the relationship. Neither I nor any of the people I had in my life could expect it. From the outside we seemed like the perfect couple, and I felt that was the case too. It turned out she’d been holding in some resentment about something that had happened literal months ago. Between then and the breakup, I’d made multiple deliberate reminders that she could always come to me to work out our problems and that I’d rather talk through something than let it push us apart. Despite my efforts, that’s exactly what ended up happening. It really sucks. It’s been a few months and I haven’t been able to get better or move on, and it’s impacting every part of my daily life, partly, I reckon, because she was connected to every part of my life. She was my everything… until she wasn’t. I’m really struggling with all this, and I’m being absolutely consumed by it all. I personally feel that if we’d been trying to work our way through this all and both felt like we couldn’t do anything, I’d feel better, but I never had the chance to fix it and I didn’t even know this issue was a problem until she’d already pulled the plug. I hate feeling like this and so I’ve tried everything I can do to get past this and get better: sleeping and eating right, exercising, socialising, keeping up hobbies, journaling, etc but I’m still stuck. I’ve never been through this before so I don’t know what to expect or how to get through this. After reading my ramble, what do you have to say? If you’ve bee theough something similar in the past, what do you wish someone had told you then? Much appreciated, thanks in advance for all your insight.

Sorry you’re going through this very painful breakup. It suck’s alright. You didn’t see it coming & there’s been no closure. I went through something similar with a long term friendship where the friendship ended suddenly & unexpectedly. Long story but I had to walk away for my own sanity as the relationship was unhealthy- though at the time I couldn’t see it. I poured a lot of myself into the relationship which I can now see was to my detriment. I loved her & her kids.  Bit of context - I’m married with an adult son. My learnings which hopefully will help you too:

Allow yourself to grieve the loss. Grief is more complex when the person is still alive and especially when there are so many things you never got to say.

Stop blaming yourself. She chose not to talk to you & let resentment build until it was too late. You deserve someone who can be relationally honest with you. Not everyone can do that as we all have our own wounds from our families of origin.

Some relationships may seem to us to be forever but they may only be for a season to teach us something important.
It’s important not to lose yourself in any relationship be it platonic or romantic. Maintain your own interests/hobbies and be sure you are clear about your priorities in life & your values. My friend had very different priorities & values eg I’m honest to a tee & a person of integrity. I discovered later in the friendship especially at the end that she wasn’t which was a deal breaker for me. I can’t stand hypocrites who say one thing & do another.
I’m much stronger & wiser these days because of what I’ve been through.

I did seek professional help so that may be helpful for you too.

Take care 😇

Im so sorry to hear. Its painful. Im going through a different circumstance but my husband has said he doesnt think we can do this anymore and wants to seperate. It breaks something in you. I hope you have a good support network

I’m in the same position as you are. I feel miserable for loving a person so deeply yet he had to cheat on me. Despite all of this I’m still trying to work things out for the sake of the kids…and here I am feeling so lonely cause I haven’t told anyone else about this. So to everyone else we are still the ‘’perfect couple’. I have no idea what to do next and I came across this forum to just talk to someone cause I’m in a state of killing myself but I want to be alive for the kids. I just had to get it out of my chest. So sorry to have chosen your post but I felt you were going through my exact situation and you could help.
