The Vicious cycle

I hate that when I think I'm getting better, something will happen and I'll just revert back to how I was. I don't see the changing I claim to have done when I'm on a high. It feels like I have to get times of sadness to compensate for all the good times I've had.

Am I alone in thinking this?

Hi Asliverofhope,

No it just seems that way. You dont pay a price for happiness in that you fall sad and depressed for it, like a weighing scale. But I see why you do think like that.

You dont mention medication. Meds can break the cycles or at least smooth out the ups and downs. Once you've found the right one you wont ever go off them.

Finally, we now know from latest testing that when on a down slope dont try too hard and dont have to high expectations or you will slip down the slide again due to not achieving your goals.  Baby steps when in depression and baby steps when coming out of the cycle.

Take care.  Tony WK

dear Asliverofhope, welcome to the site.

What you have asked is a very valid question, but when we are deep in depression all we seem to do is stay sad, but before we can overcome this illness, we have to go different stages and what you have asked is just another stage before we can push depression away. Geoff.
