In hospital

I'm in hospital at the moment, after surgery and infection on both feet, I've been here for nearly 2 weeks now and don't know how much longer it will take. I know that I'm where i need to be, but as each day passes my depression and anxiety increases. I feel powerless to know what to do, i don't think there is anything else they can do either! Any ideas would be welcome, thanks,xx

Hi Daisy,

Great to see you posting on the forums. From your short story I get the sense that you are really frustrated during a difficult health recovery and your mental health is suffering as a result. This is quite a common experience while people are in hospital with surgery and complications like infection. As a nurse, I have worked in many hospital settings and have seen peoples mental health go unnoticed due to complex physical health issues. I wonder if you have had low mood and anxiety before your surgery?

Many larger hospital settings have a small team of mental health staff that work across the hospital wards like in medical and surgical areas. They will actually come to your room and do an assessment of how you are feeling. Not every hospital has this type of service mind you but it wouldn't hurt to talk to your doctor or nurse and ask for a mental health consult. As you are feeling increasingly low in your mood and very anxious and would like someone to talk with, I definitely think that they would be a good first step.

If the hospital is not helpful in getting you the help you need, then you can always reach out to the beyondblue support line on 1300 22 4636 or you could use an online therapy course for anxiety and low mood like Mindspot which is free and online or Moodgym. It might also be a good idea to talk to someone you trust like a friend or family member.

Being in hospital is stressful at the best of times, never mind when you have been there for two weeks and are experiencing complications. But there are some strategies that can be helpful that you can do from your room and you have already started this by reaching out on the forum.

Wishing you the best possible outcome,

Nurse Jenn

Hi Daisy8,

How are you doing? Sorry to hear you’ve been stuck in hospital, and hope you’re doing ok, and maybe you’ve had some more info by now that’s helpful to you or still waiting about. Wishing you wellness and even though we don’t know each other stay happy you’re taking care of yourself by getting your infection treated and admire that you are strong in reaching out for support while you’re in limbo. Hope things are improving, thinking of you.
