Hi all,
It's been a long time since I've posted, lots of big changes over the last 18 months. Over the past 6 months we've had a series of bad news with family members' and friends' serious health issues and many other stresses. In saying this, there has been lots of good things happen too. The thing I have noticed just recently is that it seems I'm beginning to enter menopause, with hot flushes, cycle changes, etc.
I already manage long term depression and anxiety, so everything seems heightened, along with a feeling of physical and mental exhaustion. I'm struggling dealing with the physical & emotional aspects of this new 'stage', along with the usual management of my mental health. I used to exercise regularly, but a minor knee injury and subsequent surgery with ongoing chronic referral pain has slowed me down. With Christmas just around the corner, I can't seem to get into the spirit either, and just find I'm dragging my feet, wishing I could just put the brakes on and curl up in bed.
Anyone else having similar entering menopause experiences?
Thanks

Thanks for sharing your story as I am sure many women will relate to this.
I finished( I hope) with menopause some years ago so I can relate.
I have bipolar so I was never sure if what I was experiencing was just me or whether they were general symptoms. I had friends who said they felt flat and irritable and no energy too. I still felt I was experiencing stronger symptoms than others.
Exercise did help me so that will be hard for you- can you swim at all?
Diet is really important too.
Have you had a chat with your doctor about your concerns.
I wanted to go to bed and have someone wake me when it was over!!
Do you have friends who are going through the same thing you can talk to ?
I think many people will be nodding as they read this.

Hi Quirky, thanks for your reply and for sharing your experiences with menopause. Having bipolar would certainly not help with menopause. I've spoken with a couple of friends who've been through menopause and that has been helpful. They've had different types of treatment with varying results.
I've spoken with my GP and he acknowledged that it sounds like I'm going into menopause. I have a female psychiatrist who I'm seeing this coming week, so will speak with her about it more too.
As for diet, I must say with all the stress & Christmas around the corner, good eating has fallen by the wayside, lots of sugar cravings, naughty I know! I really need to get back on track.
Swimming's a bit difficult for me as I get skin reactions to chlorine and, but it's not impossible. Being more of a land person, I can alternate between gentle walking and stationary bike. The feelings of exhaustion make for excuse but I really need to just do it!
Yes, what you said about wanting to go to bed and have someone wake you when it was over! That's just how I feel!

Blue Skies,
I am pleased you are seeing a doctor going on see a pyschiatrist. Having friends who have been through or who are going through menopause and being able to talk to them is helpful.
I found writing down how I was feeling helped as some days were better than others and then I might see a pattern. If you asked me I would say every day was awful but I found out the afternoons were better.Just a thought. It is so easy to generalise.
Feel free to post here when you feel like it.

Hi Blue Skies,
Menopause can be so very different for every woman who experiences it. It is good you have a few ladies to chat with and people here as well.
One of the things that hit me in menopause, is my brain going to mush! I could not remember many things or even work out how to use devices I had mastered in the past. Even my sewing machine became same strange device that dropped down out of the sky!
My mind created new words for every day items. Coathanger became "Umbrellas", the lawn mower was a tractor, it was difficult to organise a cup of coffee some mornings let alone cook a meal.
Then there are the hot flushes, one way to cut down on heating bills in the winter.
Trying to keep up some exercise, throw in a bit or fruit and veg when you can and cut yourself a bit of slack for this time of year.
The library will have many books on menopause as well, I recall finding one with all kinds of funny stories in it of women's experiences with this Change Of Life!
For me, once I sort of understood what was happening, I was able to live with the effects and changes.
Cheers for now from Dools

Mrs Dool,

It is funny how once forgets things, or maybe menopause was when I started to forget.
I smiled about the brain going to mush and new words, as that what happened to me but alas even after menopause I still have the same foggy brain!!
Hot flushes great in winter, bad in summer. A friend said have light layers on so when you are tempted to take clothes off, you will have one layer left!!
I think that book you mentioned was by a comedian Jean kitson - but I maybe wrong. Was it was an Australian book.
Thanks Mrs Dool you made me smile and remember. It is funny how selective my memory can be!

Sorry,
My quote function has a mode of its own, I tried to delete it but it wanted to stay!!
I don't even have the excuse of menopause for my mushy brain just technically challenged!
My post starts on the 6th line.

Thanks Doolhof. I can certainly identify what you said about the "brain going to mush". It is certainly very mushy at the moment, with me calling things different names etc. The Change of Life book sounds good too 🙂

No worries Quirky. The hot flushes are certainly no fun in summer 😞
