Dear TCA~
I was raced by quail once. I was driving slowly down a little coastal road in NZ one time and these little birds kept pace then went in front, only tiny with little topknots. Later I found they were California Quail.
(I have no idea if they eat spiders though.)

awww! what a treat! California quail are so funny, I find that they're a bit shy sometimes but really cheeky little things XD
The boys in my aviary act like police officers, they keep the peace between the different species which is really amusing to watch cause they look so ridiculous with their dumb topknots hahaha

Dear That_crazy_araneologist~
That's fascinating, I am most surprised as I would not have thought the different species would have interacted much at all. Are the California ones particularly territorial?
The ones I saw were 3 adults and a few mostly grown but a bit smaller. They ran in straight lines and I was a little worried when they went in front to the car, but all was ok, even the slowest one.
I liked watching them but they never came again, pity.
What made you decide to collect quail?

It started as a social experiment, I chose quail because I love them so much and have had button and Japanese quail since I was a little kid, but it's turned into a full on society now! It's amazing, they even try to mimic calls of the other species for some common ground...but no actually, the bobwhite quail are most territorial; I have this one hen who gets this crazy glint in her eye and then goes terminator mode XD lucky for me, the California police still run the show, so nobody has been hurt really
And oh cuteee!! I love when they run in a line, absolutely adorable hehehe. That sucks that they didn't come back tho 😕 fingers crossed they decide to one day
