Taking too deep a breath from anxiety

I start getting anxious and take too deep a breath. Then have what I call a 'nervous attack' when I feel nervous all over. Any suggestions?

Hi Kim78,

Welcome to beyond blue.

probably the best suggestion I can give you is to have a look at the threads on grounding and mindfulness on the forums here. There are many different ways of dealing with the issues and can be a case of finding out what works for you.

I am unsure of what sort of suggestions you are looking for. Also if you want to talk more here about your anxiety I will listen to you here.

Hi Kim78,

Thanks for your post. I'm trying to picture your experience and I'm kind of imagining this sudden sharp inhale as if you've been out of air and just gasping for it? Does that make sense or describe your experience?

Tim / Smallwolf gave some great ideas around grounding and mindfulness. Ultimately it's finding some strategies to help you with your breathing and help you before you get to that nervous state. Being able to focus on your breathing and take slower deeper breaths can help self-regulate so that you're less likely to have these nervous attacks.

Hope that this is somewhat helpful. Let us know if theres anyway that we can help.
