Overthinking and want to stop

How do I stop? I started a new job and I thought the overthinking will stop but I feel like it’s only going to get worse. I think it is expected of me to work overtime which I am ok in doing but I also catch public transport so don’t want to miss my train. I am overthinking thinking they hate me already. I don’t know how to stop and this is a constant issue I have is I overthink for nothing how do I get better? Then when I overthink I cry and that’s not who I am or want to be.

Hi, welcome

Yes, been there and you'll be happy that there is solutions to this problem that appears uncontrollable.

Communication is often lacking with people that over think. Often other people in the same situation wont have that problem nor the anxiety that follows if they have normal communication skills. Often they ask questions that cut off the worry before it comes along. For example with your needs of catching public transport does your employer know you do this and even if he/she does, would he think of that with all the other problems he has on his mind?

Assumptions are your enemy. Assuming they hate you is a common reaction to some of us that think they are being inconsiderate when they might just be forgetful, there is a difference.

Ok, so how do you get rid of overthinking?

  • Visit your GP and tell them of your problem. A lingering diagnosis like anxiety or social anxiety wont disappear without treatment
  • Try to give other the "benefit of the doubt" - dont assume anything until you know the facts
  • Try to communicate effectively and directly to your boss. Maybe they can release you from work to allow you to catch your transport schedule.
  • Prevention is better than cure
  • While on the train/bus as soon as you start worrying about work issues pick up your phone and play a game or message a friend... thats distraction and it can work. Thankyou for writing in as this is what we are here for.

I hope you are ok
