Looking for some advice please...

Hello,

I was just wanting to get some advice from anyone.
I have generalised anxiety and have had this for many years.

I currently have an overseas trip booked with my husband and some friends for May this year. We are going to LA and Vegas.
With all this recent coronavirus stuff happening it has peaked my anxiety something shocking.
I already get anxious enough about leaving the country in general now adding this on top has made things so much worse.

I was just wanting to know opinions on if we should replan our trip for the end of the year or if we should just go in May like planned?
I have spoken to our travel agent and she has said right now we should be still ok to go but that could change.
I have spoken with my friend about it and she is really pushing that we still go. She doesn't seem to get how this is all making me feel because she doesn't personally deal with anxiety in the way I do.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Hi Jmk!

It's completely rational to be concerned about coronavirus, and specifically how/if it will affect your international travel plans. Even for seasoned travelers, venturing abroad can be a nerve-wracking experience even when the headlines aren't full of stories about a new illness.

I know how frustrating it can be when a friend doesn't get where we are coming from with our anxiety, especially in this case with such a reasonable concern! But there are plenty of reasons to think this trip will be just fine.

First, in 2 months from now the virus *might* be more widespread, but we will also know much more about it than we do now. All that new knowledge about its course, how it spreads/doesn't spread, etc., will all be taken into account by all the health and travel authorities whose job it is to make sure that people move around the world safely. I have been to LA and Las Vegas and can confidently say that in addition to wonderful vacation spots, they both have world-class facilities for dealing with sickness should it come up on your trip.

Everyone from your travel agent to the people working at the airline to the scientists working on a vaccine are all keenly aware that thousands of people just like you have exciting travel plans coming up, and are all in touch with one another to share the latest information to make sure everyone gets to their destination safely and in good health.

As an American living abroad here in Australia, I can say that even if the worst comes to pass and coronavirus interrupts your trip, the facilities and resources available to you will feel very familiar and are of excellent quality. For now though, everyone whose job it is to keep an eye on this kind of thing has determined that you're good to go!

What sorts of things do you have planned for your trip?

Best,

Gems

Hi Jmk22,

We recognise how the recent media coverage on the coronavirus can be contributing to increased feelings of anxiety. To add to some great points from uncut_gems, limiting your media intake, switching off from bad news, and ensuring your sources of coverage on the coronavirus are from credible sources may further assist you with managing some of your worries surrounding your upcoming trip. If you feel like your anxiety is not improving and is becoming quite overwhelming for you it is important to seek professional support. For additonal support and resources to help you with managing your mental health during this time, as well as information on accessing credible sources regarding the coronavirus outbreak we’d suggest taking a look at our new webpage on ‘Looking after your mental health during the coronavirus outbreak’: https://www.beyondblue.org.au/the-facts/looking-after-your-mental-health-during-the-coronavirus-outb... .

We appreciate you being open about your experiences and hope to see you around the forums, whenever you feel up to it!

Hi

This pesky coronavirus!

I plan to travel around may/june for long service leave - but everywhere I want to go (except Singapore) either has a do not travel/or reconsider your travel advisories.

right now - as of 5/3 the smart traveller has the USA advice level as 'Exercise normal safety precautions'. As uncut_gems has said - in 2 months the virus 'might' be more wide spread. It 'could' be worse at the time you reschedule your holiday for.

My opinion would be to go on your holiday as planned just keep an eye out for advisory changes.
