Insomnia

I wanted to share my experience, because I am struggling with anxiety. It keeps me up at night and I am unable to sleep. I am worried about my new job, and even though I have many years experience I still lay awake at night thinking about all the things that  could go wrong and then this will make me look like an imposter,  fraud and incompetent. Logically I know this isn't the case, but the anxiety has a strong grip on me that I end up avoiding the situation. Deep down I know this makes things work, it's like I am stuck in a cycle that I can't seem to break out of. It makes me feel guilty and depressed.

Hi Dee14,

Welcome to the Forums! It sounds like these feelings have really been weighing on you and we’re glad that you should share here.

So many of us here can relate to those feelings of imposter syndrome and the anxiety of being so certain that we’ll get discovered as a total imposter at any moment. It is great that you are able to reflect on the “evidence” behind those thoughts and recognise that you are indeed qualified and experienced at your job. While it can be easier said than done, being able to take a look at those thoughts and repeat to ourselves “these are just thoughts, not necessarily the truth” can be a good way to prevent that sense of rumination that can so easily occur when the thoughts feel so loud.

Is there anyone who is supporting you in managing this? It is a lot to be carrying on your own. It may be worthwhile booking in with a GP to discuss your concerns and potential support options, if you are interested.

In the meantime, has there been anything that you have found helpful that you have tried, or anything you have noticed about times when it has been easier to fall asleep? We’d love to hear about anything that might have worked for you.

We have an existing thread, ‘Insomnia Group Chat’, if you would like to join in. We also have a page on mental health and sleep here: Sleep and Mental Health 🙂

Thank you again for sharing here. Please feel free to jump back in at any time with any updates. We are here to support you, 24/7.

Kind regards
