Anxiety & graduate role

I am having issues at the moment with a constant high level of anxiety.

I started my first role out of uni two months ago and it is making me miserable. Every day I wake up an hour before my alarm and my anxiety starts about possible things I may have done wrong at work & May get in trouble for. The company I work for are very strict and when I make a mistake it is always made out as a big deal and people get really angry at me. The company culture is negative and it is taking a great toll on me.

My stomach has been upset for the past month due to my anxiety and I am unsure how to solve this problem. From talks with my colleagues the company does not care for things like this and I won’t get any help (it is a small company).

As it took me a year to find a graduate role I then have anxiety that if I quit I won’t find another, especially as a two month stint might make me look weak on my resume.

Please give some advice, I spend my whole weekend & week nights in a state of anxiety and I don’t know how much longer I can put up with it. Thanks.

Hi Rose,

Welcome to beyond blue.

Anxiety at work can get you at any time. And it does not need a negative culture. I had/have anxiety and depression for some time and these days I see a psychiatrist and psychologist on a regular basis and take medication. So you are not alone here. You will also find other stories in the anxiety section similar to yours as well.

Not that it matters, but what sort of work is it?

As far as coping mechanisms are concerned, you could check out the threads on grounding and mindfulness on the forums for plenty of ideas.

One thing that you might find helpful is sleep and being able to empty your mind before going to sleep. Do you go to sleep thinking about things you might have done wrong due the day, thinking what you might mess up tomorrow? I did and would wake up during the night thinking about that. So if you have any sort of distraction tools that can put you into a good place or not thinking about work that is a starting point. And two apps my psych got me to use were virtual hope box and relax melodies. Try them?

Of course getting professional help is also an option and there is no shame in doing this. You might start with the K10 test on the beyond blue website and a chat with your GP?

Hope some of this helps. Also you will be well supported by others in this community while here.

Peace and blessings,

Tim

Hi Tim

I work in a marketing admin role, however there is lots of invoicing involved that is giving me the anxiety - dealing with large amounts of money.

I do worry before I go to sleep and it wakes me up in the night as well with my heart racing, but now it has seeped into the day as well and every time I get to work I feel like im on the brink of an anxiety attack.

I am going to a psychologist this week, but am feeling so down and trying not to give up and give my resignation in. I’ve worked other jobs before and had anxiety now and then but I was able to manage it. This has gone on for so long now it’s kind of become normal..

thanks for the app suggestions, I will have a look into them !

Well done for going to speak with a psychologist. You probably know this already, but don't expect instant fixes. It will take time. In the meantime, when you have time, check out the threads I mentioned on grounding and mindfulness. Both have ideas from other users here on what works for them to get back to the present moment.

If you have any questions or concerns please let me know.

Tim
