Anxiety from job search due to ageism

Hi there I am in my mid forties and just finished my 8 year contract work. Now back in the job hunting mode and feeling overwhelmed by uncertainties due to age. I hear too often about age discrimination and it's really hitting me hard not knowing if employers or recruiters are actually discriminating me due to age. I fear for my future. Anyone had the same experience.

Hi ThomasJakeLim

I’m in my forties and I’ve felt similar fears about job searching. I was out of the workforce for a few years after having kids. I’d been the same job for the previous 9 years.

I’ve felt very overwhelmed about how to start all over again especially after such a gap. The industry I’m in tends to be full of young people.

I received a call out of the blue from a friend of an old workmate a couple of weeks ago. They were looking for someone on a casual basis. I had almost no time to prepare or get nervous for the interview as it all happened so quickly.

My first week at the job was very scary and I was sick with nerves but after another week I’m starting to feel better.

I’m sure there may be some ageism out there... but a good employer will look at the strengths you have and see you in a good light.

Sometimes putting the word out to people you know that you’re looking for work can help.

I hope you go ok. You’re not alone and you have support here. Hopefully others will come along and talk about their experiences.

For me it's harder because ive been out of work for a long time. Suffering with these issues as a result of bullying in the last job i was in. I was even on disability for a while. Trying to get back into the work force at nearly 35 is a nightmare. I dont know what to do anymore. Im struggling from the stress, depression and anxiety of it all. But at the same time i don't want to be out of work for the rest of my life either. I dont know what to do. I'm upset because i feel like there's no hope.

Hi Cee thanks for sharing your story. Have faith your next job will be kinder and better. No one deserves to be bullied at work.

Hi Lily thanks for taking the time to share your experience and advice. Priceless, gives me hope.
