Anxiety after drinking

Hi there,

I'm new to beyond blue so this is my first post.

I had a heavy night out on Saturday, and had the 'beer fear' all of Sunday. I was pretty hungover so simply tried to keep myself distracted and calm, and put it out of my mind as 'just a hangover'.

Here I am on Monday, still feeling it. I was up early to get to the gym which did make me feel a little better, but I'm sat at my desk with my heart racing, body trembling, knot in my stomach, and I can't focus on anything.

I feel very tired too, as I believe the anxiety I have been feeling meant I had a poor nights sleep and I had some stressful dreams.

Is it usual to have heightened anxiety for two days post-drinking?

Hi PomInSydney, welcome to the forums.

We have a thread here on this topic that you might find useful to read:

Hi PominSydney,

Welcome to the forum. I've nor ever experienced anything like you have described so I might not be much help to you.

I do know though that the more I worry about something and re-think things, and listen to those negative thoughts in my mind the worse I feel.

Do you suffer from anxiety at any other time other then when drinking? If so, how do you usually cope?

After work today it may help you to try and do all of your usual activities, keep to the routine, go to bed at your usual time and maybe go for a walk after work if possible to help clear the mind.

Wishing you all the best with sorting this out!

Cheers from Dools

Thank you Doolhof

I do occasionally go through short term spats of anxiety. This is usually related to my self-confidence, future plans, performance at work (this last one less recently).

I am prone to some social anxiety at times - especially when with new people and especially in large groups, which is probably why I drank so much on Saturday.

But even with all of the above the anxiety I would normally feel is less intense than what I've experienced this time.

Thank you Sophie_M,

I read that post with interest and found so guidance helpful.

The reason I thought I would post separately is that although I've had this beer fear before, this time it is much more severe and has last longer than before.

I wondered if perhaps this is the start of a non-alcohol related anxious period of time for me, or weather it's a 2-day hangover type thing that other have also experienced. (Also probably my anxious mind over-thinking what I'm feeling! I realise now as I write this down!)

Hey PomInSydney,

Welcome to the forums and thanks for opening up to us and providing us with an insight into your situation.

Are there any other things in your life that may be causing you to excessively stress at the moment? Maybe this period of beer fear is more severe due to other things going on in your life at this moment? It could very well be a period of non-alcoholic related anxiety. I guess a lot of the time we tend to overthink a lot of things so maybe give it a few days to a week and see if you still feel the same way.

Hope this helped.

Look forward to hearing from you again.
