I have been struggling eating and eating healthy foods over the last couple of weeks. I really do not want to go back further to how I use to eat, that is eating junk food, takeaways, copious amounts of chocolate, processed junk and comfort eating.
Finding it challenging to stay motivated to actually prepare what I know helps me feel better mentally, emotionally and physically. Plus I have been feeling overwhelmed with other stuff happening in my life, which somehow makes it more challenging. The old unhealthy comfort eating thing is coming back. And I think I am getting concerned and scared about that. I so much do not want to go back to how I use to be. I was so sick. Plus I now have some physical things not right in my body , so I need to be more careful and mindful of what I eat. ( Pre cancer cells , high blood pressure )
I was eating really well since Febuary of this year, it’s just the last couple of weeks I haven’t.
So I would like to use this thread to help me be accountable to Beyond Blue people. So like a diary where I can post and report what I eat. And also any healthy eating tips, motivating strategies to help eat better or anything related to healthy eating for our bodies including our mental health.

Hi Shell,
There's a lot of brands selling...you could always Google and look at reviews etc.
Bcas I have a diagnosis Im able to get meals on wheels. Not really sure what the criteria is either but I'm enjoying them..
Im currently making a yoghurt cake. I add eggs, cornflour, chia seeds, lemon, sugar, and vanilla to yoghurt, mix and bake. It's delicious....

Hey there monkey_magic,
It's really not your fault that your weight isn't budging. Your body is absolutely doing what it's meant to do. If you google the journal article "Weight Science: Evaluating the evidence for a paradigm shift" you'll read that diets don't work in the long term term for the majority of the population, so it becomes about how can we look after the bodies we are in right now, without focusing on weight loss. It's a big shift in mindset though for some people, but a liberating one I've found.

Well this an update of sorts I guess. Update on what is going on with me in regards to eating for my health and wellness.
I am not eating for my health or wellness. Some days I just find it hard to care about myself in this way. Foods have been hot white bread toast with vegemite. ( because it's quick and easy) Chocolate, hot chips. Lots of mandarines. So hardly any vegetables really. I did make a salad but had no appetite for it. So I couldn't eat it. This has been going on for 2 weeks or so. It has left me extremely tired. Aching legs. Sleeping is not as good. Feeling bad about myself. Ashamed of how I look... wanting to hide away. Which seems easier at this time in history then any other. I am aware of what foods I am able to eat that benefit me and make me feel much better. I can cook, but it's challenging to do so at the moment. It all seems such an effort. I am responsible to cook for others here. I just made a lasagna for them. I could feel my body sort of dragging around as I made it.
White bread makes me feel like I have cement in me. So heavy, but I found myself just eating it. I know it is addictive as is the chocolate and hot chips. Hardly any nutrition in all that. Eat crap feel like crap. I know I will feel so much better if I take better care. Just venting mostly.

Hi there Shelll,
Thanks for your update. It sounds like you've been beating yourself up a bit and I'm sorry to hear that you've been wanting to hide away.
You mentioned that you've been eating particular foods because it's quick and easy - this is perfectly ok. We can't always be cooking the "perfect" meal and be eating for optimum health 24/7, sometimes we need to eat what is quick and easy. You also mentioned that you have to cook for others - this is extra work for you.
It also sounds like perhaps you (like most people) divide foods into a binary of good foods/bad foods which assigns a moral value to food, when really, food is just food. it sounds like when you beat yourself up for eating so called "crap foods", it may make you feel worse and feel shame.
I hope that you can be gentle with yourself and with time, give yourself full permission to eat all foods, free of shame.

Thankyou for your reply. Appreciate you giving your time to me.
Um yeah I already give myself permission to eat any food. I tell myself it is all permitted but not all beneficial to me. But what I have learnt is some food actually makes me not well. White bread, chocolate etc is some of that food. Truly affects me in a bad way not only my mental health but physical health as well.
I am not sure what you mean by moral food. It is as simple has what food makes me well and which ones don't. And I am keenly aware which ones make me not well. Which is where I am currently at.
I really do Thankyou though. I do not have an eating disorder or anything. I am sorry if I gave you the wrong impression.
Bless you

Food food glorious or not so glorious food!
I ordered a garlic bread pizza and felt heavy and gluggy after that one so I know what you mean. I've also had a wine here and there which feels like poison to me. Much prefer a green juice and a scrumptious filling salad.
Ive been on a road trip and eating out the whole time and it's a bit hit and miss. My home cooked stuff is much better. Feel like I'm filling myself up on a lot of crap during my travels.

Hi Shell
Just a quick message as something occurred to me. There’s some white bread that’s not as ‘bad’ as we’re told white bread is - have you tried some low gi, high fibre and fortified with say iron or some minerals? You might feel better about eating that?

Hello Shelly, and everyone reading/posting here...🤗.
Oh I do love garlic bread...garlic pizza bread sounds yummy Magic...I often make my own garlic bread with one of those long French sticks...
I agree Shelly, we really shouldn’t deny ourselves any food that we like...I think moderation is the key to not feeling so sluggish, yucky etc...I will be the first to admit, that since learnt that I’m allowed* to buy what I want to now...I have bought things I’ve never are before and um well.....can eat to much of the yummier ones I try...😂...which always seems to be not that healthy..isn’t it a shame that salad doesn’t taste like chocolate..if it did I would probably live on salad...
Today I’m thinking of making a healthy fried rice with lots of vegetables and spices added...I haven’t tried brown rice yet, or if it’s okay to use for fried rice, but I’m going to give it a try....
Remember, that life is too short to deny ourselves some of the yummier foods available to us....but if possible in moderation only...
Kind thoughts with my love and care to everyone..

Hi Grandy, how did your fried rice with lots of vegetables go and what spices did you use?
I did make some rice the other day too. I use brown basmati. I find it much lighter and fluffier then other brown rices. And seems to work will for fried rices
I wish I could eat foods like chocolate etc in moderation. But the truth is I cannot. Eating a whole block every single day is definitely not moderation. Which is what I am currently doing. Its very discouraging. And my health is suffering because of it.
