I have often been told to just be myself but then I am encouraged to be softer, think less, eat less, worry less, relax more , exercise more, be more confident, less timid, less cautious, more adventurous, less selfish, stop being a people pleaser, be happier, be kinder , ask less questions and the list goes on.
I find this confusing if I am to be myself why must I change?
The other problem is who am I, which self should I be: the introvert, the extrovert, the cautious, the risk-taker, the overthinker, the fast talker, the quiet one, the indecisive one, the spontaneous one, the carefree one, the worried one, the selfish one, the altruistic one, and much more.
Thse two words be yourself seem so easy for many people but not for me as it fills me with many questions.
I will limit myself to two questions .
Can you be yourself without changing?
Is it possible to change/improve a part of yourself and still be yourself?

I can see from posts on other threads that you have a lot to cope with that's why I admire your ability to still have fun and laugh.
What do you do you to motivate yourself when you get tired of trying?
Take care

Hi Quirky,
I think that's a good question 🙂 I have my thoughts on it but am curious to hear what answers you receive first.
Kind thoughts,

How do I motivate myself when I am tired of trying?
I think it depends how exhausted I am. If I have over done things again, I try to slow down a bit and get a rest even if it is a long walk, a bath(if I had one) even reading a book I had been promising myself to read. Then I make a list, who would have guessed that disorganised me would write lists, so I can work out what is important. I only out 3 at most on the list.
I suppose it depends what I am trying to do
Of course if The above does not help, I eat chocolate !!

Hi Quirky,
Just thought id throw in my 2 cents worth.
Ahh motivation- When I was well my motivation was to win at all costs, to be perfect at everything- well we all know how that turned out ! HA
So now my motivation is I don't want to go back to where I was. Re physical health, for a long while I was bed bound, wheelchair, crutches then a cane- now I walk unaided and so long as I continue exercise and walking then I will be ok, so remembering those dark days keep me motivated- still not easy on cold days or when sick like now, but just keep pushing through.
As for mental health same thing- days upon days of being zonked out on pain meds, chronic depression and anxiety, panic attacks. Don't want to go back there. Lots of treatment and therapy have given me the motivation to once again have a decent life- something 5 years ago I thought was over.
More recently thoughts of my beautiful children and grandson keep me motivated because I do not want them to be the memories they have of me- unacceptable. I have lots to do to make up for those times so that's my overall motivation.
Oh and the fact I am much happier in myself for having been given a second chance - I want to be deserving of that!
Cheers

Hello everyone
motivation
oh how I miss those maniac times, yes I now know that is a place I must not go.
Best form is omg mother in-law is on her way.😱
If I sit for to long, I can now feel my mood dropping and can take action ie move.
I am motivated when people are near me as I don't want confrontation so I go do something.
I get very frustrated if I get to the end of a day and have not achieved anything new. I am always looking for things to do,I know I like to give people, hubby, family the surprise factor,eg rip up carpet cause I hate it,paint the kitchen, change door handles, take of ugly shower screen, move furniture around, and so on.
I used to have motivation for my family, now I enjoy my pets and gardens they seem to be happy with what I do for them.
Thats it I'm pumped, I'm going to get MOTIVATED 🤗

I find other people's stories so helpful so thanks for your insight and honesty. Your family is lucky to have you.
You have certainly motivated yourself to get better. Well done

I agree moving is good for motivation. I like the idea of surprises for others, I need a bit of warning for a surprise for myself!!
Pets and gardens are usually most appreciative alas I have neither.
Let me know what you achieved with your new motivation.
Take care

Hi Quirky
You have a great thread happening here!
I dont think we can change ourselves so to speak.
Gently & Slowly striving for self improvement and having some peace in our lives does work
I know that if I see the ceiling in the morning its going to be a good day 🙂

When I'm home (currently on holidays in Qld), i try to keep to a ritual.
Wake, shower, 2km walk, brekky, For me, it starts my day with a better chance of a happy time. If I'm not motivated anytime later it matters not, I've done my excercise.
But I am retired.
