Okay, so after more than a year I've been with her and she has really bad anxiety.
She never drives me anywhere becuase apparently i will judge her. It is really starting to annoy me to say the least.
But the thing is, she can drop my good friend home after school with no troubles.

How do I fix this? Please help

Hi Adamhill177

Welcome to the forums and good on you for posting!

I understand you as I have had anxiety for a long time and its a mongrel to have.

Does your girlfriend have anxiety anywhere else at all?...Besides driving?

If I can ask you, why will your girlfriend judge you? Is she a bad driver in your opinion?

just trying to help 🙂

She has it many other times than just driving. She will hardly ever go out to meet new people with me (such as family members)

It isn't my problem but she can't even walk into the school gates. Maybe like once out of 5 times she will go inside. And when she goes inside, she doesn't sit in class, she sits outside.

She's a good driver, ive been in her car once while she was driving and it wasn't that bad.

Hi Adam

My apologies for the delay responding.

Its sad that she sits outside without going into class. I hope that she can (if she isnt already) see the school counsellor so she can get better. If I may ask, do you know if she is getting any help from her GP?

Good on you for looking out for her Adam

Hi Adam,

Sufferers find anxiety difficult to understand because it defies reason and logic. No intellectual understanding can make a dent on it because it depends on a different area of the brain (the one in charge of the fight and flight response). I used to have bad anxiety attacks too and found them very frustrating. They didn't make sense to my reasoning brain but kept happening anyway.

What makes perfect sense is that anxiety is even more difficult to understand for those around us...which means they often end up saying/doing unhelpful things that can lead to unresolvable arguments...and so despair on both sides.

I suggest you scroll down to the bottom of this page and have a look at the "Facts" section. It will help you figure what your gf -and yourself- are both up against. Also check the "Supporting someone" section.

You don't mention if your gf has been seeking medical assistance. Though it involves the mind, anxiety is a medical condition and should be regarded and treated as such. So -if she hasn't done so already- encouraging her to talk to a GP would be a good start. Anxiety often has deep-rooted causes which need working on.

Both research (for both of you) and treatment (for her) would help improve the relationship. Kudos to you for caring enough to reach out and share your concerns.

Kindest thoughts.
