Counselling and Group Sessions

Hi,

I am attending “group sessions” for depression as an outpatient. And have done so as an inpatient.

I’d like to ask what people’s opinions are about there being “no wrong answers” in a group session.

To me this is very strange... Of course there are wrong answers. Just like there are wrong things said here in response other people’s questions. I’m not saying it happens often, or that it happens intentionally. I would just like to feel that my opinion matters enough to be treated truthfully. I don’t mind being wrong. I mind not knowing if what I have said, or think, is wrong.

It is clear it only takes one trigger, one negative comment to shatter a whole hobby. Re: “if it isn’t a necessity, don’t spend money on it” I assume such comments were from others not yourself?

My motorcycles have included a Suzuki GT 750 waterbottle. Cars included an FJ I restored but sold before completion and my current car is a JBA FALCON tourer which you can google. I've just finished building a matching caravan.

I do understand not continuing hobbies like stamps, coins and so on for they arent creative. But other shed stuff including cars can keep your mind occupied much more as you know.

I'm beginning to see how your world has eroded away. It seems its like burnout? A "been there done that" feeling...with nothing left available that stimulates you, is that accurate?

Your near incident with the old man on that flight, is that a reflevtion of your intolerance of people in general or is it from a confined space? Do you have drive to become a hermit? I've had such myself thats why it interests me.

I like the Cream Black colour combination. Car imitating a Morgan/MG, with uk Ford running gear and an Aussie Holden V6?

I built an EA Falcon GT in the exact same combination. Car was “Chamois” originally, I added XR6 (no V8 EA) go fast/loud bits, wings, bumpers with black hi lights everywhere. Had a matching car trailer for my Datsun Stanza rally car. Car was stolen (twice), Stanza went bye byes after children/house, trailer gone not much later. Did Oran Park (yes that old) short track in around 50sec (faster than an HQ race car. I did have an extra 1/2L and 2 gears, but no race tyres and it was my daily driver)

My bike is an ER6N... fuel injected twin with 53kw... only 3kw more than your bike after 30-40 years.

I don’t have a confined space “issue”... but yes I am very intolerant of intolerant people and often have the “been there, done that” attitude. That is a very Autistic trait. “What do you mean you want flowers again? You got some last Valentine’s Day”.

On flights I have headphones in and am always reading, listening, watching or sleeping. Always by myself. So I guess a hermit style of travel. But not intentionally so. Always in the same seat, always arranged the same way, usually the same airline and flight, always the same seat and food/drink in the lounge... Usually the same hotel with the same routine. Even the cleaners/chefs/bar staff/maintenance people called me Mr David and had everything prepared for my arrival.

I like driving/riding if the trip has a purpose. I can’t go out to just enjoy a trip. I was going to go on the Black Dog ride this weekend, but the weather and the GP might keep me at home (that and any other excuse I can find).

Yes, cream and black and a semi retro caravan now nearly registered. That's interesting about your Stanza. I owned two Ford Escorts Twin cams, you would know them, most were raced, mine only in Ford 4 car club days at Calder now thunderdome...a desert of a race track now a shame.

Having such a knowledge about cars have you thought about owning a dream machine? See, when we attend shows, we parked then walk, We both don't like answering the same old questions from 200 people for the whole day. Some people say "well you own a classic or nice car to show off" , no, I own one to drive, I enjoy driving something special and unique.

I think our vintage its not good to work on such machines too much, I just enjoy tinkering now. I owned and restored a Mk3 Zephyr also. Do these cars stir anything inside you? Another FJ perhaps? What would be stopping you from exploring the possibility of returning to such an interest?

Sounds like you are comfortable in your own skin and aren't reliant on others company.

FJ - old story

Porsche 356 - another “rant” from a previously missed chance involving money and my “white whale”

Puma (South Africa/Brazil VW Karmann Ghia/Brasília based “factory kit car”) - recent missed chance due to money

Mini Cooper - seriously rare original car owned by my ex until she sold it while I was in hospital

I own my “dream” car... VE series II Commodore SS Sportwagon Black Manual. I doubt you could find a more versatile/affordable performance vehicle. (Note that “fun” doesn’t enter into the equation) - once I get White HDT Aero wheels and a VL Mobil 05 (with David instead of Mobil) wrap it will be complete. (I already have a 05 Mobil helmet... probably from the BMW era, but close enough, and not a Sierra. Sorry, Fixed or Repaired Daily doesn’t cut it) But it is still just a tool.

I have no aspirations of racing anything any more (I wanted to do the Tassie Targa type races in the Mini... ideal car for the category up to 1100cc). I did supersprints, motorkhanas and navigational rallies, and that was enough.

And yes, my knowledge of Australian cars from 1948 (and before if you count coach building) to around 10 years ago, is almost encyclopaedic. I have written to Holden several times pointing out errors in their advertising material. And the 1000s of car magazines I sold, I read before I sold them.

Thunderdome was an interesting idea of Bob’s, but with a lack of similar facilities around the country, it was never going to work.

At the moment, I’m thinking a VF/VG Valiant Pacer as it is affordable, none of the above, no bad memories, a reasonably potent V8, and I like the look of it. Square boxy body like an HG.

I’m comfortable in my own skin when I’m in my comfort zone, behind a keyboard, or behind my knowledge... but that’s it. Out of my element is really out of my element.

I’m talking to Specialisterne, in the hope of returning to the workforce. Once/if that happens, other opportunities may open up.

Not a completely negative opposition post.

Yes, I notice, not a negative opposing post. lol.

The VG Valiant was my second favourite. I owned a VC 1966 and was a good car albeit a little thirsty slant 6.

I prefer the chargers in particular the 340 V8.

I don't blame you for not reversing the clock, we have that in common. I simply remind myself of the negatives of a particular car I owned. Take the Datsun 2000 sports. It had heavy steering and drove me crazy with it. Otherwise a nice car for its time. The Lotus engines in the escort were fickle and hard to tune, leaked oil badly and now they are asking $40,000 and simply aren't worth it.

I also don't like rust hence the JBA. I like the Puma.

My last interest vehicle was a trike with a roof. A panther trike, I designed the roof with a Mazda 121 sunroof as its base and had the roof built around that. There is a youtube video of it, yellow of course. Originally a VW engine then Subaru then I supercharged the Subaru engine, it blew up then got it reconditioned and sold it. Grew tired of cold weather regardless that we were fairly well covered.

I understand your comfort zone comments. In fact I feel that we have advanced a fair bit here on these several posts. I would like to think you feel ok to remain on this forum and see it as a safe place just to hang around, make comment as you please and we have a base now, I certainly feel I got to know you more. I hope Specialisterne works out, a purpose, distraction...

thanks for the support, and for not giving up.

I found the trike when I was looking for your JBA. I have dealt with many VW engines, the mechanics assistant job I had was at a VW specialist (And a VW guru legend... Owned/Built the Karmann Ghia in “Hot 4s #2”. Owned/Built a Type 3 Ute. The number plate on the Mighty Boy delivery car were VW501 meaning the #1 Class 5 Off-road Rally car 30+ years ago) and have always wondered if there was a VW - Subaru connection, apparently there was not, just a major coincidence they were both horizontaly opposed 1600cc 4 cylinder.

Max’s (boss) favourite saying was “VW’s aren’t air cooled, they are oil cooled”.

The Legendary next generation “supercar” E55... died with the Phase 4 and the XU2... sad days. Closest I have driven is a “Chrysler by Chrysler” station wagon... that thing was the size of a small aircraft carrier.

I don’t like yellow... Push bike stolen. Mini Clubman stolen and written off. VH Commodore stolen and used in a bag snatching spree. And always car dealers would offer less trade in as nobody wants yellow, but ask more when selling because they were rare.

I don’t hold the faults of a car against them, just the actions of people involved. Having said that, I have never owned a real lemon. A few boat anchors, but no lemons. And proudly all Australian made except for a Focus, a 131, and the Stanza. (How the chev V8 SSs were classed as Aussie built I don’t really understand). Another reason why I am not going to update my car ever again.h

Talk about fickle... Abarth 131... topped out at around 100km/h due to rally spec gearbox, needed constant maintenance, an electric fan to stop overheating, a slap on the dash to make the radio work, front tyres every 10 meters due to serious camber, range of 20 meters... I used to slipstream trucks to and from work to avoid having to fill up every second day. But it was so much fun to drive. My ex BIL’s car.

Why supercharge instead of turbo? Not like you need low rev torque for a trike?

I watched the GP action today, a first step in restarting something I used to enjoy. All I have to do is figure out how to watch the rest... no Foxtel.

The supercharger was chosen as it was easier to install and had boost from idle, also the ea81 Brumby engine didn't have much torque and I was towing a camper trailer. Boost at higher revs would have caused unexpected wheel stand too. Also a SC off a Toyota MR2 the SC12 was ideal, compact. Needed custom made manifolds and Dellorto carbie on it but went well. Unfortunately hard to tune, no EFI, no EI etc. So good at 2500rpm but not anywhere else lol

The Brumby ea81 engine was designed for aircraft. Compact, light, water cooled. Not much more power than the 1916VW though.

You owned a nice car and agree, I wouldn't sell it either. I wont sell my JBA either. I do want to change my 3.7 Cortina diff to a 2.92 Cortina diff one day, that will result in towing with 4th gear instead of fifth. Better.

So, your first step in returning to cars in some capacity. Even if its strictly spectator activity- doesn't matter. It's cheaper that way anyhow.

I was only posting to see how you are traveling...and hopefully you are doing reasonably well!

After reading the last few posts it seems my knowledge of cars isnt as comprehensive as I thought..oops 😉

In 1981 during the 'fuel crisis' I turned down a 1969 Boss Ford Mustang 429 with low klms....This is very painful to write....The dealer was in Brighton Vic and he wanted $10,000......firm. Metallic Blue...manual...with books etc

My dad had a Norton when he was young in the UK.....Was the 'Norton' a good bike?? (I have no idea)

Hi Paul,

Yes I used to be a big F1 fan... trying to get back into it, but as Syd is the only free televised one it will be a hard slog. I was a major Schumacher fan.

Ditto for the tin tops.

But as both are essentially silhouette series and $$$ = wins they lack a certain appeal. No more can an “underdog” succeed. No more is it race on Sunday, sell on Monday. The group N races provide for a small amount of reminiscing. The Supercars look more like the Sport Sedans of old.

The Porsche was advertised for $8k 30 years ago. Hamilton’s delivery, matching numbers Super 90. Restored would be $100-$150k now.

The Morris Cooper was owned/built by my then partner’s father, an old open wheel Cooper driver/mechanic... had lots of unorthodox modifications but was 100% “original”.

Watching the races this weekend there were lots of “what ifs”.
