Walking Shoes - Walking and Other Exercise

Hey to anyone reading this.

Last night I had an idea about starting a new thread about exercise especially walking. I am aware that walking is very beneficial for our mental, emotional and physical well being. And by actually doing it....well it can make a huge difference to how we cope with the storms that we face in life.

OK, I am not real good at disciplining myself to walk, and have to really push myself to do it. And sometimes it is even hard to leave this bedroom. Anyway I am not a beginner walker, as I have stuck to sort of a plan before. So I know that it does make me feel somewhat better. But I only stayed on the plan for a couple of months, then gave up.....for whatever reason. So here I am again wanting desperately to not fail this time.

So I guess this thread is for anyone that does walk, anyone that is struggling to walk because of depression or anxiety issues. And anyone else really......

I am unsure of the outcome of all this. But my ideas included: Sharing about things we have found out about exercise especially about walking. Writing down the reasons that one would chose to walk ( like something to help motivate). Being accountable in same way. Sharing about the places where we actually do walk, like the beach, gym, around the block, with the dog, out to the clothesline and back. And any other useful tips that could help others. So here we go......

Today I went walking out on the breakwater path again. The sun was out, nice blue sky. I enjoyed the walk.

Currently I am away, staying in this beautiful small cottage attached to someone's house.I can hear the ocean now right in this room. I love it.

We have already been for a walk. A walk in the moonlight and by torch. The walk started by opening this door, stepping outside onto a timber deck. It's beautifully decorated out here. I absolutely love this row of hooks on our own private little deck.

We walked through a timber slated gate, and out onto the road. Followed this in the direction of the noise of the waves. It wasn't far to walk until we came across a small open area. Looking down was rocks. Large ones and water spraying up over them. It was too rocky and dark to walk down there. So we took to a path that has bushland on the side. We could still hear the ocean. On the left of us, was the cutest of cemertries. With very neat headstones. It looked pretty open and modern. Not at all creepy looking.

We kept following this path and eventually found a narrower one leading down to the beach. We didn't see one single other person, except a rather large person on the balcony when on the way back.

We walked on the beach, it was nice and cold. Refreshing and it felt good to breathe in the crisp air.

We walked for a while, sometimes shining the torch up into the sand dunes, though not seeing much up there, as our torch was not a strong one. And sometimes shining it towards the ocean.

We decided to head back after we had walked about 20 mins or so. Maybe not even that long. Even though I was tired, I still enjoyed this walk a lot.

Yesterday was wet cold & miserable so not inviting to do much. We drove to Ikea to look at some things I want in my kitchen. My walk was around Ikea which is quite a long walk with lots of stops to look at things & get ideas for my house. I took measurements of what I wanted but need to check how it will fit. Not a normal walk but it still is a walk even if indoors out of the cold & rain. Today we visited my daughter & got a treatment for my very sore back so no exercise. Hopefully will do better tomorrow

Those IKEA store are super large. The one down Sydney way is. You can walk and walk for hours around it. Did you get ideas for your kitchen then?

Today I felt like I was walking a lot of the day. It started by walking through some Sunday outside markets.

Then we walked down a wharf with large boats docked in there. A lot of these boats were bopping up and down with the rough water. The water was a real blue.

Then we walked through the town centre. It was quite busy with a lot of people walking about. We has lunch in a beautiful beachy type cafe. Then later walked back to the car, passing a lady playing a keyboard and singing.

Later on we drove up a winding steep road. The road lead to a lookout. Once up there we walked on a path through bushland. They had giant liliies growing in there with tall red stemed flowers. The view was beautiful from the lookout. You could see the ocean, far away beaches, a few islands that looked like they were all trees growing on them. It was nice and sunny. And the air was fresh, that type of air often makes me feel so much better.

After the lookout we drove to another beach. We just discovered it. To get to that one it involved walking down sandy soil type steps, the ground was quite rocky in places. Once down the steps... Oh wow... We saw the most cutest of beaches. Properly only about 200 metres long. We had it all to ourselves. Which was really good. We walked the length of it. At times I walked in the water. It felt so very nice on my feet.

The ocean here was super rough too with large waves.

After this walk well we had an adventure. We scrambled over so many rocks and pepples. I found it a real challenge. If one wants to do an activity to distract yourself from hard times we'll this would be it. I found myself so focused on making sure I stepped right. So many rocks wobbled. You had to really watch what you were doing. At one point we followed a very narrow track through the bush. Hoping it would lead us somewhere, but it didn't go anywhere, so we had to turn around and walk back towards the wobbly rocks. We passed a couple of fisherman, who made this walking on rocks look easy. Not to worry it flattened out some. And we were headed to the point. At this headland point were whales. So we were told by some passer-by people. Once at the point we did see the spray of water coming from their spouts. Awesome.

We had to head back as the sun was getting lower in the sky. We figured it would be almost impossible to walk over all those rocks in the dark.

I did enjoy today with all the walking. One time I lost my balance on those rocks. Tears, but I am fine now.

Your walk near the beach sounds lovely. I assume you were with someone to share the experience.

Yes Shell Ikea stores are huge & set up so you have to wind through the store like a maze rather than just up the relevant aisle like a normal shop. Still need to measure things to see if what I want will fit.

Today my son invited me to walk with his family. It has been very cold & wet so my husband stayed home. My son promised his kids an adventure. My boots were caked with mud. My DIL slipped in the mud a couple of times. I sprained a muscle getting caught climbing over a massive log & my grandsons ended up soaked & muddy. They were very excited to go on such a wet, muddy slippery walk. One section had lots of fallen trees over the track. Then we ended in the middle of the bush having to bush bash through the forest to find the track. My son used hid GPS on his phone to get us back on track. Even the 11 year old was happy being up high in his carrier. He didn't mind getting his head scraped with leaves etc & he liked being bounced around as my son scrambled over obstacles with him. My son & DIL take the attitude that they have a bath to clean the kids after their adventure & the washing machine can deal with the clothes so the kids can get dirty & have fun. We walked about 6 km but it felt longer because of the obstacles.

Oh wow Elizabeth that did sound like an adventure your walk. Is that an 11 year old grandson in a carrier? Sorry if that is weird question. I just can not imagine an 11 year in one. I don't know much about carriers only those ones for babies.

My walk was a much smaller one today. We discovered a little bay with sort of a sandy beach.

There were boats moored in this bay, quite a few of them. Then there were smaller ones turned upside down all in a neat row were the grassy area meeted the sand. Dinghys (think that is spelt correct?)

Along this bay/beach there were mangroves up further, and a bit of seaweed. We also kicked a pear along the sand as we walked. The pear just happened to be there.

It was a pretty short walk, but interesting all the same. Especially seeing all the boats and kicking the pear along was sort of fun.

Hi Shelll. Been reading your posts about walking shoes- walking & other exercise. Sounds interesting what you have accomplished by exercising & encouraging others on the BB Forums to participate.. sounds like a lot of fun. Perhaps I'll join in along with you & the other. Now I'm no young person so will start of very slowly. Decided walking is best for me. The state I live in certain areas are hot spots & in lockdown so am very limited of where I can walk. Most likely inside. Keep up with good work. Have a lovely day.

" the rose, the ole chook"

Hello the Rose,

Welcome, it's always nice to see a new person come on this walking/exercise thread.

And your last comment about the "ole chook" Well you just made me smile. 😊

And yeah good idea to start of walking slowly. Walking inside is fine, someone else on here was doing that at times too. Think it was Annie. Hopefully in your area you will be able to venture out more after all the lockdowns and such.

Even walking out to the clothesline is good if you have one.

And you too, have a lovely day. It looks sunny out
