Walking Shoes - Walking and Other Exercise

Hey to anyone reading this.

Last night I had an idea about starting a new thread about exercise especially walking. I am aware that walking is very beneficial for our mental, emotional and physical well being. And by actually doing it....well it can make a huge difference to how we cope with the storms that we face in life.

OK, I am not real good at disciplining myself to walk, and have to really push myself to do it. And sometimes it is even hard to leave this bedroom. Anyway I am not a beginner walker, as I have stuck to sort of a plan before. So I know that it does make me feel somewhat better. But I only stayed on the plan for a couple of months, then gave up.....for whatever reason. So here I am again wanting desperately to not fail this time.

So I guess this thread is for anyone that does walk, anyone that is struggling to walk because of depression or anxiety issues. And anyone else really......

I am unsure of the outcome of all this. But my ideas included: Sharing about things we have found out about exercise especially about walking. Writing down the reasons that one would chose to walk ( like something to help motivate). Being accountable in same way. Sharing about the places where we actually do walk, like the beach, gym, around the block, with the dog, out to the clothesline and back. And any other useful tips that could help others. So here we go......

I really enjoyed the walk I had on the beach today. It was refreshingly cold. There were no people swimming at all despite the swim between the flags being there.

Saw someone fishing though.

We walked right to the end and back.

I noticed a new volley ball net on the sand right next to the other one.

I noticed a few shells, some broken some whole, seaweed and pepples. I decided to look up a bit more today. Up into the very blue sky. I don't know it just made me feel a bit better and I could feel my body walking taller. A nice confident feeling.

At the end of this beach we heard and saw 2 low flying small planes zoom across the sky over the ocean. They sounded so loud.

I really focused on the crashing noise of the waves too as they hit the sand.

I wore absolutely no shoes today. From the house across the grass out front to the car. Then I walked across the beach car park feeling the smooth, yet bumpy in places ground there. I felt the coolness of the damp sand on the steps going to the beach.

Just wanted to not were shoes.

Hey Mrs D, my hubby and my son are not keen for me to walk in the dark either. I have always seen it sort of like a protective thing.

I like the sound of your walk as well. So your sister... Is she younger or older then you? I am so glad you meet up with her and walk every now and then.

I went for a beautiful walk with my sister through the historical town which is about 15mins drive from us. The one with the stone curb and gutters. I think they were cut and laid by convicts. A lot of the homes are very old, but have been well maintained. And some with pretty gardens. We walked down the main street then up through the parallel street near it. It was a narrow street. I did not notice much more of my surroundings because we were focused a lot on sort of visiting.

In the afternoon I went walking on the breakwater path near the ocean. There were a few people out and about. I always notice the dogs walking along the path. It is a popular spot for them.

There was something else we noticed....and it was dolphins. They were inside the port making there way up stream. We just saw their fins and parts of the top of their bodies. They sort of look rubbery to me. Super cute. I enjoyed seeing them. Not sure why.

I also noticed pelicans up in the sky just gliding in the wind current. So very carefree.

We kept on walking towards the end of this path. It seems like a lot happened on this walk. Because very soon we heard and saw 4 low flying planes again. I do not know what sort of planes they were.

Anyway as we reached the end, we heard such beautiful music, it sounded like bag pipes. Thought it may have been someones ring tone on their phone. But as we got closer... We saw a man on his push bike, facing the ocean. The beautiful sound was coming from him. It was a recorder. This guy was simply facing the ocean waves and playing tunes that made you feel like you were in another place. Scotland came to my mind. It was so peaceful and soothing. Other people stopped their walking and stood behind him and listened as well. Not even sure he was aware of the people behind him. I could have just sat there and drank it all in.

Anyway we walked on back. I really enjoyed this walk.

Thanks for your lovely description of your walk. I went away for a couple of days & did some lovely walks even if the weather was terrible. We stayed near a beach so did several coastal walks. With the recent issues in Victoria it felt very safe. Being cold & wet there weren't many people so very easy to pass people safely while exchanging a smile & hello. Prior to Covid you took it for granted being able to enjoy a walk but now I really appreciated feeling free to walk safely. On the way home on Tuesday we drove short distances & stopped whenever I saw a nice beach or river waterfall etc. This allowed us to do quite a few short but nice walks in sunny weather. Once it reached 2pm we got in the car & drove straight home.

Hi Shell, Elizabeth and All,

Thanks for sharing about your walks. I wasn't motivated for a walk yesterday.

Shell, I know what you mean when you are walking with someone else, you don't always get the impact of what is around you, and that is okay.

My sister is younger than me. It is wonderful we have this opportunity to go walking together.

Today my husband has some things he wants to do down in the city, so he is going to drop me off at one of the beaches for an hour's walk.

I might try to go walking Saturday and Sunday morning before I go to work.

Hope you are all keeping well!

Cheers from Dools

Ah nice being able to get to the beach Elizabeth. That would break up the trip a bit stopping every now and then, and stretch your legs by walking some. Plus you are experiencing something beautiful like with the waterfalls and beaches

Yes I agree you don't always have to notice things around you when you walk. Connecting with and spending time with loved ones, like chatting is also good for us hey.

Oh glad you are getting the opportunity to go for a walk on the beach. I know you generally would like that.

Yesterday we met my son & family at a local park to go for a walk. It was quite busy with car parks overflowing but once walking there was enough room to pass people safely. At the start they had built an area of rocks where the grandkids enjoyed jumping from one to another & balancing on the rocks. It was fun watching them enjoy themselves. My son took us up a path I've never been before ending on top of a hill with massive rocks to climb. On the way was a lot of kangaroos with joeys in their pouches. The 6 yr old wanted me to race him. I'm not good at running so he could beat me. It was nice to spend time together in nice surroundings.

Your walk with you family sounded really good. Little ones often just like the simple things in life, like jumping from rock to rock. Just enjoying the moment sort of thing.
