Hi Everybody
This is only the basic dictionary definition...
"Mindfulness is a state of active, open attention on the present. When you're mindful, you observe your thoughts and feelings from a distance without judging them good or bad. Instead of letting your life pass you by, mindfulness means living in the moment without judgement"
- Please be as blunt you wish....If you dont have an idea about mindfulness it would be great if you could let us know
- If mindfulness hasnt worked/or is too broad a concept for you it would great if you can let us know your thoughts too
- If mindfulness has helped you, please help others to help themselves by posting how you have embraced this mindset
It goes without saying that the forums are a judgement free zone and I really hope that everyone can jump in and have their say

Hey whose_da_man88.....Its great to have you on the Mindfulness thread and good to see you too! I wrote this thread after seeing 'Mindfulness' being used in the media by health professionals as form of trying to find some peace which is fine yet I still struggle with the term itself
You asked 'whats next' Man88.....Where anxiety is concerned....Unfortunately it takes a huge amount of determination (that we dont really have) and a strong desire to heal. Frequent visits to a GP or counselor are essential so we can find our way out of this.....seriously.....No pain...No gain
You are doing everything you can Man88....and that makes you a legend....even by being a part of the forum family is a huge step to finding some peace (thats why Im on here...I just keep on trying)
Moon is another legend that has a better grasp of 'Mindfulness' than I do
Moon mentioned " mindfulness and meditation are two entirely different things. Practically exact opposites in fact" Thanks heaps for helping out here (thumbs up!)

Hi blondguy,
Just like I struggle to accept I have anxiety, I struggle with understanding what I mindfulness is, despite the amount of definitions online but I struggle even more to understand if I am doing it properly ... maybe part of the perfectionist part of me but if I am to overcome anxiety, I need to be doing the right thing and hence the reason I found this thread.
Moon throws a curveball into my understanding but I did just find this statement online ...
Mindfulness is the awareness of “some-thing,” while meditation is the awareness of “no-thing.”
So when I am being mindful, aside from focusing on the breathe, what else should I be focused on and how long etc? From the definition I found, I'm guessing the mental scans must be part of being mindful then?

Thanks for your post. I understand that accepting 'anxiety' is a pain. You mentioned on another thread that you have done everything possible where scans etc are concerned and good on you too!
Moon was only speaking from her own experience as I am on this thread.
Mindfulness is difficult to understand from my situation even though I have an idea of its meaning
Mindfulness and breathing techniques do help....after we have spent some time with our GP/Counselor
It is hard to fix something that we dont understand especially in the early stages of this anxiety condition
I respect your strength in having the tests done as you have a proactive attitude. Any questions are always welcome!

I have just read your posts and your questions and as someone who has questions and is unsure of what I am doing with mindfulness at times ,I found them interesting.
Sometimes I think the questioning and reflecting is all part of the process. I know I overthink but if one thing helps me I try to accept that .
When people do yoga , they do it at there own pace, some can do very complicated poses and breathing and others do simple ones and as long as they are benefitting that is helpful.
I agree there is so much information about mindulness and that was confusing me.
i think if I can slow down a bit, focus on breathing and when needed stay in the moment , I have achieved something. Whether that is mindfulness or not I am not sure it matters if it is helping me.

Hello Man88....firstly, so sorry if I confused things even more for you...I certainly didn't mean to...if you can scroll back this thread to January 4, you'll find where I described in detail, my own experience which I see as "mindfulness". You will see that I did no preparation, no "mental scans" (I don't know what they are) beforehand...these pockets of peace just happened to me, and instead of brushing them aside ...I stopped and went with them, noticing and being aware of the "things" I saw to the exclusion of anything else....
You put it in a nutshell...mindfulness is the awareness of "something" while meditation is the awareness of "nothing".
there is no preparation needed for mindfulness...whereas when I meditate...I decide the time and place, light a candle, put some meditation music on, try to empty my mind of everything except my breathe in and out....all the usual stuff we're taught about meditation.....
I don't think to myself "Ok now I will do some mindfulness".
I sincerely hope I haven't thrown any more curveballs your way....i am no expert, just hoping you find some pockets of peace through this hazardous journey called life!

I can not empty my mind, but I can not focus on one thing, mind is always churning over a washing machine full of clothes .
So I just count and breathe , may not be mindfulness , but it can let me focus for a little and slow down a little.
I will never achieve the insights that others do and calmness but I can count .

Hi everyone,
Wow what a great thread, there are so many cool ideas and conceptions of mindfulness; it's been super interesting to read!
One thing I've noted is that a lot of people perceive mindfulness as a behaviour which promotes relaxation and relief, but not really understanding why that is. The way I understand mindfulness, and the way it brings that relaxation, is that it gives a brief separation from the constant thoughts of our unconscious minds; I'll elaborate.
So basically, we feel as though we are in control of our thoughts; that they come up because we initiate them. "I'm going to have a piece of toast"; I could have had any food, but I freely chose toast. But if we stop and really analyse how our thoughts arise, we find that they just pop into existence; did I think to myself "I'll choose toast", or did my brain say "you want toast", and I instantly thought "I'll have toast"?. If we really just sit there, and see where our mind goes, then it becomes clear that these thoughts sort of emerge out of our subconscious, and we're only thinking them once they're forced into our consciousness. There is much more to this but I'm still learning, and I'll keep it a bit brief, because the topic is mindfulness, not consciousness!
So what this means, if you accept that your thoughts are unconscious, is that we're experiencing a torrent of thought throughout the day, with no real control over what thoughts we have. They can be relentless in nature, whether they're about regret, embarrassment, anxiety, fear, the past, the future, multiple universes; anything. But when we're lost in these thoughts (which is almost all the time), we're not in the present, we're just watching whatever our unconscious mind serves up. Mindfulness, sometimes achieved by meditation, can be a way of separating yourself from these thoughts, and just watching them, acknowledging that those thoughts do not define you, and that you can find peace and happiness independently of them.
Mindfulness can help acknowledge that the past and future don't exist, they're just memories stored as electrical signals, or predictions about what's to come in an unpredictable world. What this means is that all that's left is the present; this moment, these sensations and feelings, and nothing else is really 'real'. The goal is to enjoy this moment, and not get swept up in all the uncontrollable thoughts about past and future which really don't exist.

i have struggled the subject, mindfulness since when I first started practising (7 mths ago). I have read so many explanations and advice however seems not very easy to set yourself up into it. I have given up at some stages. However I feel as though it can be something like an unconscious way to practise it!? Maybe I should give it a try, disregard the outcome or stressing on the results as it does take time to feel!!!
