Hi Everybody
Without a doubt Facebook is one of the best social media sites. I have been on FB for a long time and found it invaluable yet very stressful at times whilst having anxiety and/or depression or even just checking it every day.
Your views on FB, its impact on your mental health, well being, whether good or not so good are more than welcome.
Thankyou for reading my thread topic!
my kind thoughts

Hey Lici
SadMushroom was posting in regard to FB themselves having our DOB/Mobile on our original account application. FB recently admitted to 87,000,000 members privacy being used by a third party for 'research' Its not a huge problem for Australian members of FB but handy to know...I have put in the copy & paste link below...
http://www.abc.net.au/news/2018-04-05/facebook-raises-cambridge-analytica-estimates/9620652
I have family members on FB and they are now careful about what they post despite the positives. The FB privacy issue doesnt effect your immediate privacy where your contacts are concerned in any way Lici
The positives far outweigh the negatives as Smallwolf mentioned 🙂

Hey Paul,
Ahh that yep yep I read about that case and checked to make sure that I wasn't a part of it.
The thing is though, every time you Google something your data is collected, emails can be hacked, the government's data has been hacked etc etc. Another example is using job sites such as Seek and uploading your resume, that's got a lot more information on it and is vulnerable as well.
The only way to completely protect your information is to not use the internet at all really, and the unfortunate truth is in today's society that's pretty much impossible.
I tend to not worry much about identity theft personally, the person stealing my identity would have not much to gain from it 😂 they're welcome to pay off my hecs debt though!
Kind regards,
Lici

Thanks Paul 😊 I'm glad to contribute.
Being careful online is the way to go no matter what you're using especially with personal information. I think as long as people stop and think about what they're saying/sharing and learn/ know how to control the online environment they're in, then their online experience can be very positive.
I was using social media so to speak before Facebook though, I used mIRC and msn messenger etc way before facebook was around so I think I learnt things from those experiences.
Kind regards,
Lici

Hi all, I am not sure how I feel about fb either. Its good for seeing how close friends/family are going, lovely pics of them etc....but most of the people on my list are acquaintances, not personal friends and I find it amazing that so many seem to be having such fabulous lives! a while back there I was in danger of having FOMO (fear of missing out)
do you reckon the folk who post just about every single day, of the tiniest thing they are doing, eg. seeing the sunrise, or sunset, walking on the beach, having a haircut, finding a nice pair of shoes, the tv show they watched last night, the meal they cooked, the new shrub in their garden....which is all very nice, but is everyone else really that interested??
what is their need to post constantly? are they genuinely very friendly people, who really do like everyone else, have a sunny nature, never get depressed, be brilliant cooks, housekeepers etc etc? Or are they insecure and need reassurance and praise from others? I would be interested to know your views.....cheers, Moon S

I hear you loud and clear Moon....If anyone has views on this please share 🙂

Hi all 😊
Moon: I think you might have a point there. People who are insecure or feel the need for constant approval would probably post more to fb if they place value in fb. It's an interesting question to think about. Maybe it's a bit to do with introversion vs extroversion as well? More extroverted people would post as they naturally interact more with people whereas introverted people tend to be more solitary? I'll ponder on that more.
Paul: it's funny you mention that. Remember how I mentioned how having your resume hacked through a place like seek would be worse than having the information on fb hacked? Well a couple of days after I said that I received two emails from previous companies that I had applied for jobs for years ago informing me that the site they used had been hacked and people's resume information taken. These two places I had applied to 5 years or over ago. It's amazing how long they keep your information for.
I'm past caring about privacy now. There's really no such thing anymore if you're online. It's just the perception of privacy that exists. I find worrying about if my information has been taken or could be taken just increases my anxiety. Better to just enjoy fb for what it is and just limit what information is shared. My boyfriend for example has catching big fish as his job lol no-one actually has to give their proper information if they don't wish to.
Anyway I hope everyone has a wonderful day!

Hi everyone😉
Facebook to me is really bad, I lost my best friend of that and I totally still have scars from it, I even I have dreams of seeing him and I know somewhere in my head I still think about him and actually miss him. But I always think to myself if I didn't I have Facebook or messenger to start with this never would of happen. Its not the first this social media had done so much damage to me, mean I have ended up getting the police involved in this. Even when I didn't have Facebook I actually dreaded over getting a account on there because I didn't like it then and I still don't like it now.

Hey Lici
Good point and thankyou Lici. I do remember you posting about Seek and what happened and sure our privacy is over rated by just being on line. The enjoyment people get out of FB can outweigh the privacy issues 🙂
Just a note...I wrote this thread so the many people that suffer from various disorders like anxiety depression BiPolar and Schizophrenia are aware that Facebook may be a confronting/ non productive place to post. An unmoderated social media platform can also be a trigger for a person with a mental illness/disorder.
Hey Hyper Girl
Thankyou for helping out and contributing to the Facebook thread. I am sorry that your experience was really bad. This is the problem with FB..its not moderated and can be hurtful as people can say what they wish. I am sorry about your best friend..that is very very sad.
I havent been on Facebook for years as it was too hostile for me (my friends were). Can I ask you why you dread getting a social media now? Is it because of the loss of your best friend?
Your posts are just as important as anyone else's here...including mine
Thanks heaps Lici and Hyper Girl for being here 🙂
my kind thoughts

Hello blondguy
I wonder if you have long blond hair that would look like a surfer, I can imagine that😂
Well I was kind of forced into getting a Facebook account my dad kept nagging me and so I got one and I have had that many problems with it
1:I am really paranoid because my parents check everything and now I am scared of literally doing anything.
2: when I lost my best friend, went though so Much pain. I cloudnt eat or sleep because I was crying every day for two weeks.
3: ever since I got a Facebook account my parents have became more strict and they seem to blame me for everything like its my fault.
The good things I learnt from Facebook are:
1: I realized my friends wern't actually my friends.
2: I have learnt not to try and say bad things when I am in a bad mood ( though its still hard for me)
3: that any social media doesn't actually show what the person is turely like.
Thank you blondguy😄
I see you coming out of the water towards me shaking your long blond hair with your shortboard and you look happy because you won the surf title for 2018, the crowd cheers😂
