Hello Everybody and new posters especially:-)
I have had anxiety since 1983 and depression from 1997. There is always someone that says 'You have to Love Yourself' before recovery. When people are suffering from anxiety/depression this may be the last 'advice' they really need. This is only my experience when I am 'advised to love myself' to rebuild my life. I have heard the following from people that cant 'love themselves' which is fair enough as I am a person that cant either. Your thoughts will help me and others learn from your point of view. I can only be 'gentle' to myself to heal...not love.
- Why should I love myself if I dont in the first place?
- I am in a dark place, how can I love myself?
- I dont deserve to love myself
- I am depressed...How can I love myself?
- I have mega anxiety attacks..what is there to love about myself?
- I hate myself and what I stand for...why should I?
- I love my partner more...I will care about myself 'later'
When people have depression/anxiety/denial they dont need to be counseled with ' love yourself'. Thats a huge ask.
I dont need to climb Mt Everest by trying to love myself when I cant. It can be an unrealistic and even silly target to achieve having depression
I just prefer to be 'gentle' to myself. Same results and way less stress 🙂 Your thoughts/opinions are more than welcome
Thankyou so much
Paul

l can well understand the psychological relation between managing your diabetes or many other things in life , with feeling good about yourself , ourselves . l always feel much better when l do good at something , anything but a health situation would be far more so.
One trap l'm getting far too into lately is way too much time on the pc and so life is just becoming a pc , and my fav place to mess around on the pc is in bed ,which just doubles an already seriously isolating bad habit , that just sends you lower and into feeling even worse about yourself , life. There must be billions of people all over the world locked up at home alone and living through a pc these days and sadly so many kids on phones too.
l think it's arse about with life things effecting us in these ways , l know we need to not rely on things , just us , things are just things but we're still us regardless so theoretically things should have nothing to do with it , but they certainly help.

I hate myself inside and out, I can't find a single thing I like about myself.
I'm not saying this for attention and sympathy, but it's true.

Hello everyone...
Im sorry you feel that way about yourself dear Tayla...
I wish you could see what we all see here..your kindness, your care, your compassion in supporting others...There’s so much about you to like/love...
I think accepting ourselves comes we can like ourselves...accepting that no one is perfect..we are all unique people..all different in so many ways, hair, shapes, size, skin, eyes, rich, poor, doesn’t matter what we look like, what we wear, whether we work or not...We all have that one thing that is unique about ourselves...
I read somewhere once...”That we need to stop hating ourselves for the person we are not and thing we are not able to do......and start liking/loving ourselves for the person we are....and the things that we can do”...
Embrace yourselves...Like you did when you were a very small child...and didn’t know anything about hate...We we’re born with no understand or knowledge of hate...We learned about it along our journey in life...and use it on ourselves....
Liking yourself starts within your soul...We were born with loving ourselves.....not born hating ourselves....Please try hard to look into your heart and seek out that inner child and start liking yourself and who you are.....We are all beautiful and caring people...every single one of us..
Kind and caring thoughts.
Grandy..

As I was standing at the sink, I thought about this thread, and wondered if there's a thread where we can write things we do like about ourselves? Or would it be appropriate to pop here, do you think? I'm not sure...
Anyway, I did think of something that I liked about myself, but it's gone already. I'm not surprised as I'm in a weird place right now. Let me know what you think.

Mb20lover lover
I used to feel like that and many people reading your post would.
Maybe think of one thing you don’t dislike about yourself .
Are there days or parts of the day when there is something you like. I think you have written you are kind and polite to others on this forum and I would agree.
Katy I think on this thread you can say what you like about yourself, maybe Paul has a comment on that.
or you could start a thread 3 things I like about myself or something like that.

Hey Quirky...it's me again....yes at the risk of sounding like a broken record....I like myself!!
(Now this is me being wistful and melancholy )....I just wish other people liked me as much as I do myself to hear me crying out "help me, someone please help me".......but they don't seem to hear me or see me. Perhaps the person they like is a store dummy perhaps, a very likeable one.....they obviously wouldn't like the person who is screaming silently to them "Help me"

Hello Dear Moon...
I know I don’t know you in person...although I don’t think that matters at all....I have known you through these wonderful forums...and I like you very much....
I wish I could offer you more support lovely Moon...In r/ it’s so much easier to give a person a gentle hug and some kind words to try to make them feel like they are being listened to and cared for and liked...I can only do these things through words...but if I knew you in r/l...I would most certainly give you a hug 🤗 through the screen...to let you know I care about you and like you...
Love dear Moon...💜🤗..and a hug..
Grandy..

Hey everyone.
Grandy - thank you for the kind words, I guess you're right about how we're all unique in our own ways and whatnot. I appreciate it. I struggle to accept compliments from anybody.
quirky - there's nothing that I don't dislike about myself though, but thanks for the suggestion anyway. I appreciate that too.
Moon - I understand how you feel. I like you. I wish, like Grandy said, I could offer you more support too. But I'm here for you and everyone else on the forums. We're all here for you.

I like the way you write so honestly. Like grandy I don’t know you but over the years I like and respect you. I suppose I have never been popular, not at school not at work not even in my family,,! My mother said not everyone would like me. Now I hope someone will understand me . I suppose I want someone to take me back in time but that won’t happen.
I too wish we could help you more here but all I can offer is I will listen and be here for you.
