BOREDOM...the closed door to fun?

Depression, and I'm no expert - just a sufferer as my wife is, comes in many forms and we are all in different circumstances. That includes work, school, married, single, unemployed and the endless other differences.

What I have noticed in my last 20 years of life is the connection of being busy to less periods of depression. I've had interests in the past of vintage car restoration, gardening, building my own home and model airplanes. Clearly, the worst period of depression were during the times I was not involved in any of these interests. And when not involved I was also, among many reasons, not financially strapped enough to be involved....eg broke.

This is not including the traumatic times of broken marriages etc.

I've noticed some posters mention boredom as being their arch enemy and thought I'd make a topic out of it. So what can we do?  I feel very sorry for sufferers of depression when they have zero hobbies, zero interests in sport and even basic activities like walking or cycling. I cant conceive why anyone wouldnt like to go on a daily walk. But then I dont live their lives and we, as compassionate human beings should accept that we are all different. However, what is there to achieve on a walk?  Back to nature, fresh air, saying hello to passer bys, watching birds and the unexpected happenings.

Depression though, is a state of mind that, regardless of the listed positives, has you firstly in a mood that wont get you to even place your runners on let alone walk the 3-4 kms to make the walk worthwhile.

Ok, hobbies. I flew radio controlled model airplanes with a club. I spent countless hours building and repairing them. Flying was fun. For insurance purposes I needed to be a member of a club. The **** committee members always threw their weight around even if you didnt do wrong. The nature of the narcissist. Hence a reason I hate clubs. Very few people know how to approach a grown adult with a simple request without an authoritarian voice.

It was one of many reasons I left the hobby. But now, my interest is in motorcycles and tinkering with them, in my own shed with limited stranger contact. I'm happy as I've found the happy medium. Bit of gardening, bit of tinkering, bit of camping.

If you are bored, if you havent filled your mind with thoughts of a hobby or sport then seriously consider the change it could make. Many times when you are depressed might have been different with....mind diversion.  Hope this is of value to some.

That is around what most people get. I think it's fair to say, based on looking at the statements in the test, that the higher your score, the more likely you are to have deep seated problems with depression.

But by the same token, I think these statements can help you identify where you might need to make changes in your life. For example, "it takes a lot of change and variety to keep me really happy". If reflecting on this causes you to realise that your life and routine is actually quite monotonous, then you can take steps to change that.

Statements like "it would be very hard to find me a job that is exciting enough' are more difficult. If you feel that is true, then you are probably more inclined to be impulsive and take risks.

Winter- yuk!

A time when we are more bored than any other time of the year.

If my daughter wasnt getting married early next month we'd be heading north with our vintage car and small caravan.

So, that's why I'm more depressed than usual. I'm bored. Too cold to visit my shed (we live in the hills of NE Victoria).

Ok, another game ok Monopoly....

Hi folks,

first time I've seen this post. Can relate on so many levels. Trying to keep busy, but backing off excercise as I will do it when I can or want as opposed to the daily grind or necessity that it was. I do a lot of solitary things, bit like others hobbies come and go but rediscovered my passin for gardening and at the ripe old age of 54 tinkering with a veggie patch. Planted some Winter vegges the nurturing side of me coming out and find it so therapeutic. Today I tried to make a simple compost sifter as shown on the ABC. Despite having gone to a tech school,I couldn't put the bloody thing together .,looks simple think I have the wrong screws and will revisit hardware shop with revised shopping list. Was a frustrating few hours. I find things take a long time these days. Time I have a lot of. Using it creatively is another thing. Got to get through Winter but mentally and physically in a much better place,

cheers folks take care

Well done Yellownanna

LenM, it was ok last year. In January we srarted building our own caravan. Only 3 metres ling, 2 single beds, shower, toilet, kitchen. Weighs tare 450kgm. Then April towed it around Oz.

So I was really busy. Like you I've got my winter vegies in. We've had a glasshouse for a few years now so no frost effect.

I've also got a project to get council to erect a rotunda in the town park. So I am fairly active, just had a few cold boring days.

Golf might be coming me thinks

Hey everyone,

I am going totally crazy with this wet weather, full moon ,no teeth, and everyone being totally useless around home, they are all out ATM so I am going to do something physically before I turn into a raging monster and yet again it will be all my fault for having mental issues. It's 12 .40pm . I will let you know what I get up to.

Later

It wasn't exactly what I was looking to do but i ended up giving the chicken coop a total clean out,so I did enjoy it cause it was physical. And I know they all appreciate it.

Later

Hi later,

So did your moodchange for the better because you were busy?
