Anyone had to spend days alone without anyone to talk to?

Hi all, apart from here and a brief visit to church last night (to make it feel Christmassy and to just be with people) I've had day after day for weeks now with nobody at all to talk to. This time of year especially it's really depressing. Old friends that live far away are gradually losing contact with me - I ring them but they don't ring me. I understand they're busy with their live elsewhere but still it's hard when you're lonely. I'm going to a Christmas Eve service at the local church tomorrow night to at least be with people for a little while... but otherwise all day I'm alone, just me and the dog. Sometimes I strike up a conversation on BB but then the other person disappears and that's the end of that...

How are people meant to cope with prolonged periods of social isolation? I read, I watch DVDs, normally I'd go for long walks with the dog but thick smoke from bushfires and intense hot weather have stopped that. I go to a café alone sometimes. Any ideas/help?

Hi Paws and everyone

We're all good here! Had a lovely day in the next big town yesterday, did shopping and a lovely walk in the park and great talk with a couple who own a vineyard here about climate change and what's it's doing to them..

All the countryside is so green it's just lovely.

I've reconnected with an old friend who lives on the coast but not where I was.. We worked together long ago.. We've been having great chats! I know Her children and we have another mutual friend too.

Got home the other day to find my lawn all mowed.. My neighbour across the street has a ride on and she said she's more than happy to do the lawn for me from now on.. How wonderful!!! I won't have to pay out all that money any more... I'll have to get her something really nice for Christmas.. Her father recently died suddenly and we had a good talk..

So a few busy days. How are you Paws?

I'm off to the library later..

Hugs 🙂🐕💞

Hello Hanna,

That must have been wonderful to come home to mown lawns... I'll have to ring my mowing chap to come & mow my paddock & the big verge in the next few weeks to get it down in time for the fire season... hopefully the ground will have dried out enough by then so he won't get bogged with his bigger machine.

The dinosaurs that are our pollies still don't get what needs to be done for climate change... today's announcement was big on hot air & little else... they all have families... even if they don't care about other people I don't get why they aren't doing what will be best for their own families in the future.

I watched the second half of The Big Deal tonight... it was trying to be a bit more optimistic than last week by showing a couple of community wins over big business & the power of lobby groups... over all it was probably informative for people who don't normally follow what is happening in politics beyond the big headlines. You didn't miss much by not watching it.

I hope you found some good reads at the library.

Hi paws

I haven't watched that programme the big deal at all. Today and tomorrow are getting very hot which I never like. I had a lot of errands to run this morning so it was very busy.

Paws have you given any thought on where you might live if you move from your house, or what about aged care at home so you can get help with housework and so forth?

I'm slowly but steadily decluttering here. It feels good!

Hoping I can take Sam out to the river late this afternoon for a paddle. He's tired today.

I went to the nursery and bought a flowering pot plant for my neighbour whose father died and I left it on her porch with a card.

Hello Hanna,

That was thoughtful of you lass to give your neighbour the plant & card...

I'm not yet old enough to get any aged care services... but truthfully even if I was eligible I don't like strangers in my home so I wouldn't use them... I know I just need to push myself more.

I'm in full sympathy with Sam... it was hot & tiring here too today... now with the increasing cloud cover it is cooler, but muggy... Do keep an eye out for snakes on your walk... they are out & about with the warmer weather.

Have you managed to get the paperwork off to Vision Australia yet?

Hi Paws and everyone

Yes I hate summer now. It used to be a wonderful time but now it's heatwaves and fires.

I have music today and have to run errands this morning, things are busy lately!

Sam had lovely swims in the river late yesterday.

Pats to Woofa 🐕💞🏡

Hi paws

They've been talking on the news about the huge cost of houses in Hobart now - Hobart used to have very affordable homes.

I think it's terrible as people on low incomes who don't have parents to help them out are in a terrible situation.

Housing is an essential human need. Why can't we see this?

That's my rant for today! 🏡

Hello Hanna,

I so agree with you... which is why I think they need to get rid of all the incentives for people to buy homes as investment properties... originally it was meant to increase rental stock for low income users... but it is simply creating more housing problems as many are left empty so they qualify for the tax right downs or only rented out on air bnb etc. We need to think of homes as places to live not goods to make money from.

Lots of thunderstorms all around... Woofa is barking at every bang & some I can't hear... I'm waiting for the power to go off as is usual with storms here...

I hope music went well...

Hi Paws

Yes up where I used to live on the coast there was a huge homelessness problem and there were so many houses sitting empty because they were only rented out over Christmas and Easter. It's disgraceful we allow this to happen.

It threatened to storm here all morning but no storm and instead it's gone sunny this afternoon with strong winds and I've got hayfever!

I'm off to visit a friend now, if I can manage to talk in between sneezes!
