Patents are for inventions, not poems.  Copyright is automatic.  You don't have to do anything - you automatically own the copyright to something you create, even without saying "This is copyright", or using the "(C)" symbol or anything.

In the case of being posted on this forum, BeyondBlue probably (without looking very hard, I can't find it) has something in its Terms of Use that says they're automatically granted a licence to copy and display the content of your posts on the forum, but that doesn't mean they own the copyright.

Sorry.  Just FYI.  You can all now resume your normal business.

Hi Struggler, WK & CMF

Thank you for your kind words regarding my last poem.

I don't really know how to write a poem but I just write from my heart.

And that last one was about me at my local beach where I always feels grounded and at peace.

Poems are fun, let's keep writing!!

Jo

Odin's Beard

If someone writes a poem from scratch, not copying other people, then it is an invention.

My comment to WK was meant to be a compliment and light hearted, not to be taken seriously.

Thank you for the enlightenment and your permission for us to resume our normal business.

Struggler

I know you meant a compliment, but your post revealed a misunderstanding of patent and copyright law, and I think knowledge is always a good and interesting thing (and can even be useful, sometimes!), so I figured I'd post a factoid intended to elicit a "I learned something today!" response in its readers.

Odin's Beard

Dude, yes knowledge is useful, especially knowledge of manners.  Manner is something I suggest you learn and real fast.

This is my last post to you and please do not reply and remember the purpose of BB.

Struggler

I don't know where you think I was being rude 😕

This is an oldie, 'cause I haven't written anything lately (Bah).

Sticky Things

A man in molasses

Had three well-trained asses

To pull him up out of his bind.

A girl drowned in glue

Had a tuna or two

Who, too, rescued her dumb behind.

A plum sauce duck dinner

Had Deus Ex Machina

Set Time Itself into rewind

But a boy felled by love

Had no help from above;

Just went straight right out of his mind.

The Coffee Shop

Today I went to my coffee shop

the one that is close by

the barista is quite funny

and makes the perfect chai

I go there every day

because it is so near

today he had a joke with me

and said 'hi, is it your first time here?'

Today I sat inside the shop

sometimes I sit outside

I like to sit and watch people

just see the world go by

I like to sit there on my own

well, my little girl and me

its a nice place to sit and think

while I drink my cup of tea

I look forward to my coffee shop

the one that is close by

its what I like to do each day

to help the time just pass by

Hi all,

There appears to be a few misunderstandings.

Struggler, your post suggesting copyright be sought by me for my poems is a compliment. Thankyou sincerely. I am aware that copyright is automatic as long as it is original.

I read the following post from Odin's beard outlining copyright law. I read it in the context that it was for the purpose of those people that dont know what the law is. Your comment Struggler that I should get copyright when copyright isnt needed resulted in his comment about not needing copyright so his reply was indeed approapriate. His comment wasnt (in my view) rude nor hurtful. And his last comment about "You can all now resume your normal business" was a tongue in cheek phrase that this is a poetry thread and we can return to poetry now. I didnt see anything untoward with his posts.

I think you took his posts wrongly Struggler. I hope this clears things up and there isnt any ill feeling lingering. We need each other here and we need our friendships to be strong.

A Poem for my dad on Father's Day

Tomorrow is Father's Day

And I'll be sitting by the bay

For I know I am not seeing you

and this is making me feel blue

Mum told me you are out all day

I don't believe why would she say

that you are not home

on Father's Day

So I send you this wish

that you enjoy your day

whatever you do

on Father's Day

I wish things were different

and that I could say

that I love you so much

especially Father's Day

I have a memory of one photo

that I do not have

but it is you holding me

I just wish I could have you

hold me and tell me how much

I am loved; but deep down

I know this is true

so I must not feel blue

To my hardworking beautiful kind soul

my father - I really hope that whatever you

do tomorrow you have a nice

Father's Day

Love your beautiful little girl

with that little curl
