Favourite Bands/Singers

Hi guys,

I was inspired by Neil's thread about favourite movies.  I want to know - what are some of your favourite bands/musicians?

Do you have an album that you listen to over and over?  Is there a songwriter who you connect with, that seem like they draw their lyrics directly from your soul?  What is your favourite style of music?  Who did you grow up listening to?

Are you a musician yourself?

And importantly, I'm always looking to discover another band or genre so if you have any suggestions of a great song let me know so that I can look it up πŸ™‚

As for me, I don't really like most of the stuff that gets played on the radio.  The lyrics seem meaningless to me, and the songs are mostly produced just to make money - not to connect with an audience or tell a story.  I prefer songs and artists that are sincere and genuine, that confront important and real life topics or are emotionally touching.  that doesn't mean I live for slow ballads... no, I listen to all kinds of music, fast paced - slow and rhythmic, rap, hip hop, jazz, folk, rock, alternative, metal.... I love it so long as it has some depth.

I'm currently hooked on a band called Twenty One Pilots.  I love em!  Also, I recently discovered a genre called Nerdcore which is rapping about nerdy stuff like computer games and everyday events etc... I love rap but I don't love a lot of the language or topics that are usually rapped about, so chilling out to some lighthearted Nerdcore works for me πŸ™‚

Probably a massive cliche, but I had dreams of becoming a performer and singing on records and making music. Every time there was a school concert, I'd imagine myself on stage singing along. Unfortunately, I didn't know (still don't know) how to play an instrument and I'm actually a very terrible singer. I think, despite the emotional difficulty, it is such a privilege to have such a career where you're allowed to express yourself and have a positive impact on the lives of others.

I've always been a bit of an 'old soul' when it came to music. I was listening to jazz, blues and soul records when I was younger - as well as keeping my head in pop culture (my childhood was the bubblegum pop era, and I'm not ashamed to admit that I still get nostalgic about 90s music). But as the years went on - I found there were a few musicians that had a lasting impression on me.

Because I used to frequently write creative stories; music is a massive centre and would actually inspire some stories.

Vocally, I really love Freddie Mercury (Queen), Ella Fitzgerald, Donny Hathaway, Marvin Gaye, Harriet Wheeler (The Sundays), Phyllis Hyman. If I were making music and would say who inspired me to sing, these would be the people I look to or I'm influenced heavily by.

In terms of albums;

Extension of a Man - Donny Hathaway, Blind - The Sundays, Off the Wall - Michael Jackson, Statues - Moloko.

I listen to a lot of everything, although I do have a bit of jazzy/bluesy sensibilities. Also, possibly a cringeworthy admission coming through - but I'm a total lover of Disco music and secretly wish it made it's way back into the zeitgeist. If the music makes you feel good haha. I gravitate towards jazz, blues, soul, disco and pop. Although there are songs from every genre that I fall quite in love with.

Muse is my muse. They’ve always been there to listen to my soul dancing to their music. There is something fantastical about their middle albums in particular (Absolution, Black Hole, Resistance).

Twenty one pilots I used to listen to get through everyday with a smile on my face. Vessel is my favourite album.

Passenger is a beautiful musician and lyricist (a poet in all honesty) to the point where it’s almost hauntingly painful. Life’s for the Living and Wrong Direction are my favourite of his songs.

Queens of the Stone Age are fabulous, particularly with their album Villains. Good for if you have a lot of pent up anger and need to listen to music whilst walking/running.

I haven’t listened to a lot of Glen Miller’s music but he created one of my favourite songs; Moonlight Serenade.

Johanne Brahms’ (excuse spelling) Hungarian Dances are magnificent also.

im mostly self taught in piano and. To inspire myself to play I like listening to Chopin and a modern pianist called Elena Kats-Churnin (again, excuse spelling) who made the album Butterflying.

I grew up listening to Angus and Julia Stone, Josh Pyke, Jack Johnson, Jason Mraz, Bob Marley. Whenever I listen to them they send me shivers down my spine because they remind me of a very magical time in my life.

Dubstep is very calming oddly enough if that is a genre which floats your boat πŸ™‚

G'day Everyone.

My music tastes are, diverse, to say the least.

I listen to a lot of music (my spotify having over 3,000 songs on it. OMG). As of currently, I'm listening to a wide assortment of metal. Personally, I'm a death metal fan, lyrics are great, guitar is disgustingly amazing, the drums are the best in the business. Out of all the death metal bands though my heart lies with Gojira (if your into metal I highly suggest listening to their album L'efant Sauvage) but I can't dis Dying Fetus (Subjected to a beating has to be their best song, 1:20 seconds onward is my reason why).

However, EDC recently happened in Las Vegas so I'm listening to the set JAUZ played there.

Anyway that's my two cents.

Sincerely,

Just another guy.

I absolutely adore The Beatles, David Bowie, Queen, Elton John and Coldplay!

If i had to say favourite band of all time, it has to be incubus.

I Also like:

Linkin park

Papa roach

System of down

Aiden

Lovehatehero

Story of the year

other random stuff

future house ( little bit of singing, more beat )

Reggae ( like bob marley style)

Jazz ( slow, without singing )

Violn solo ( usually just covers of pop songs, electronic beats mixed with the violn )

Blues ( heavyish also like rock but groovy like jazz, fast )

Like your style!

My tastes are come under the 'extreme metal' category. But I also like classical. For metal, currently fleshgod apocalypse or ihsahn if going a little progressive.

HI Ashely, my ex-wife and I tried to take my eldest son to learn piano, but he gave up after 3 or 4 lessons because it was too hard, he'll rather be out kicking the footy.

Geoff.
