Hi Jez,

Welcome to the forums, glad to have you on board.

You are in good company on your journey, is there anything particular you would like some help with? Or, perhaps you would like to settle in first? Either way, we are here for you when you are ready.

You can continue the conversation here or start a new thread in one of the other sections on something specific. Let us know if you need help with navigating the forums.

Take care and I hope you enjoy being part of the community,

That’s very kind indigo and thank you.

I initially found this site when I was exploring the possibilities of using an online therapist so I’m fairly open to hearing the pros and cons that people have experienced with that. I’m warming to that idea being introverted and time poor myself.

I’m 53 now and probably need to get to the bottom of why I am the way I am. Like most on this forum I’ve had a particular traumatic last 20 years of my life ranging from anger issues, depression, anxiety, divorce, attempted suicide, going very close to becoming bankrupt, working with extremely toxic people, angina attacks, diabetes, multiple friends and family dieing. Being self employed and a workaholic I haven’t been kind to myself and had time off to heal. I feel like each event has added a chain around my neck and caused my progress forward to become impaired. I am the rock of the remaining family and have a sister with multiple myeloma that I’m keeping an I on the best I can whilst working 70 hour weeks. I also manage my aunts estate as she suffered a stroke 12 months ago and now has dementia but now being cared for in a very good facility and check in on her when I can.

That’s pretty much the tip of the iceberg but maybe you can see why I’m here. Ive also been reading about ADHD and I seem to be ticking a lot of the boxes. I’m not really sure where to go from here. To take a simplistic view I’d liken my situation to taking your car to a mechanic. The mechanic would inspect the vehicle and give you a list of things to fix and you just work through the list until the vehicle is A1 or as close to A1 as you can get.

Any advice greatly appreciated.

Jez

Hi again Jez,

That is certainly a long list of repairs you are dealing with. It really does mount up with each major challenge pulling you down further and reducing your capacity to recover from the previous challenge. At that point even the minor challenges become harder to deal with.

I have been dealing with major depression and dysthymia since I was a about 12 (now in my 60s) and the main reason it has become chronic is because it was never addressed when it first happened. I was not diagnosed until I was in my 40s and by then it was so much a part of my life, I had no idea that was what I had been dealing with all that time.

There are people in the community who do online counseling and I feel it is a good option for those who are time poor so it wouldn't hurt to post your question about pros and cons where more people will see it in the section

With respect to Anxiety, many community members have contributed to a thread on ways that have been helpful to them of managing their anxiety, you can find that thread here

There is also a similar thread on Depression which you will find here

Other sections of the forums that may be of interest to you are PTSD and Trauma, Grief and Loss, and the BB Social Zone.

I have recently, in the past few months, discovered that I have been dealing with more than I realised which forced me to look more closely at what I have been in unconscious denial about. I did work through my issues for about 10 years doing talk therapy and mistakenly thought I had a decent handle on my issues. As it turns out, much of what I have talked through is still trapped in my body and causing other health issues which I suspect may be the same for you. I am currently working with a therapist who does somatic work in addition to talk therapy and it was after a session of somatic work that I came to the above realisation. I would like to suggest when looking for an online therapist that you try to find someone who does somatic work also. Some of the therapies in this category are Somatic Experiencing, EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing) and EFT (Emotional Freedom Technique - also known as Tapping).

I hope this is of some help to you and please feel free to continue this conversation if you wish.

Indigo has written a helpful post.
Thanks for sharing your story with honesty. You have experienced so much and you are still relatively young.

Thank you indigo. I’ll work my way through all of that as it all looks very helpful. I forgot to mention that I’m stable and no one should be concerned if they don’t here from me straight away.

thanks gain.
