Wrong charge from a psychologist. Should I report this ?

Hello,

I have recently logged into MyGov Medicare and viewed my claim history. I found that my psychologist has charged me an extra session which I did not attend the counselling session. It was charged on the 1st Nov and I did not see her that day. In addition, she had charged in one other ocasdion (previously) where the session was taken place other than a consulting room - the rebate she got was higher than the normal consulting room at $84. I understand that it won’t affect me as she billed me.

i wonder if i should report this?!

I have the gut feeling that she did that on purpose knowing that I won’t be able to use up all the 10 sessions this year. I have used 5 sessions with her so far.

Any advice or comments would be great - thank you

Cheers,

Hi there Suet Suet,

It is great to see that you are checking your account and tracking your health care using some of the government online services like the online MyGov. It is a positive step in keeping track of your own health care and what is against your name in the Medicare record.

I have worked as a manager in the ATAPS program which is a funding stream offering psychological services for vulnerable people. The volume of psychological sessions that my team processed into a database was incredible and I know how good and how bad health professionals enter their data. In my role, I always assume that people have genuinely made a mistake and contact them directly before escalating a formal concern. Psychologists and other health care providers are typically quite busy and data entry errors are possible. You are certainly in your right to file a report to Medicare however another alternative is to indicate to your psychologist that your were reviewing your Medicare file and found an error in the number of sessions that were billed against your name and that one had the incorrect location. They may just amend this so it is correct and reimburse Medicare.

In any case it is amazing to see that you are such a strong advocate for assuring that the health dollar is spent where it is supposed to and keeping practitioners (like me) accountable for the work we do. The quality of healthcare is always improved the fastest when health consumers feedback into the system.

Wishing you the best outcome,

Nurse Jenn

Hello Suet suet, welcome to and I also want to welcome Nurse Jenn.

It's good you have found out because it may affect your 10 sessions, however, if by any chance a patient doesn't turn up for an appointment and doesn't notify the office, they may have to pay the fee, although this depends on your psychologist.

Not sure whether that helps you.

Geoff.

hello Nurse Jenn,

thank you for your advice. about the wrong charge. I will mention this in our next session with the psychologist. Hopefully she will adjust the fee and location accordingly. This happens as they do bulk billing and they don’t think we check what we are being charged. I only just noticed while I was tying to check my record of when I did my last blood test and discovered the wrong charge - bad luck!

Geoff,

As far as I understand if we don’t turn up for an appointment and fail to notify the clinic at least 24 hr in advance, it will attract a $50 non attedance fee. This doesn’t apply vice versa. My psychologist texted me just 2 hrs prior to our appointment and said she’d cancelled my appointment for the day.

hello,

I have just had a look at my Medicare claim lists and found out that I have been surprisingly charged 8x sessions from my psychologist through the MHCP but I went back to my appointment records and I have only been to her office for counselling for 6 sessions. I am not sure where the other 2 came from too! I wonder if he’s make-up claims or purely just an error?

When I finish a session, I would be required to sign a form to acknowledge for the attendance so that he can progress to payment.

this has made me wonder if there is any control/compliance in place to ensure the correct charges or is it purely up to the individuals to report?

Any insight into this? what should I do?
