Magnesium and Depression

Hi!

I have recently read a few articles on magnesium as a supplement to treat depression.  I am keen to try any natural alternatives to ADs and planning to speak to the Psychiatrist about it on my next visit.

In the meantime I would be interested to hear from anyone who might have had some experience with magnesium supplements - did it make a difference? Any side effects? Any views and opinions would be appreciated.

I've been using magnesium sprays and taking epsom salt baths for years now and I would say they're useful for depression and anxiety (I have both). They relax you, and when you are more relaxed, you'll be less prone to severe depression or anxiety. I'm not saying magnesium will cure you, but it certainly helps as a tool to elevate your mood. I spray myself every single day, and I honestly feel more tired, more stiff and tense if I don't.

With alternative treatments, it's always good to try them out on yourself, and see if they work for you. For me, magnesium has been really great, and I will probably be using it for life.

I take magnesium citrate per day and it has helped me enormously. I sleep very well, and it has supported me through an incredibly stressful time recently, the illness and death of my Mum.  A very good type that is well absorbed is magnesium glycinate.

I actually started to take Magnesium to help me sleep, but it had the opposite effect! I get a warm buzz from it.

If I'm feeling flat it picks me up and allows me to focus. I take the high strength tablets 600mg or 1000mg

After some research i think it is the Magnesium Citrate that elevates the mood. So check it has that.

I also take B12, which helps with mood.
