Words: Friends or Foe? How can writing help you.

People can be afraid of words as they have no confidence in what they write. Maybe at school teachers have said negative things about their writing or their parents have said they don't write well.

Some people are anxious to write their first post as they wonder if they will make sense to others.

I believe words are your friends and everyone who can read this can write in meaningful way.

I want to look at how writing can help you

1) by helping you to explain and express your feelings to others

2) allowing you to connect to others through your words

3) by keeping a journal or starting a thread here and learn from your own writing and read others.

4) by helping you work out how to change certain behaviours

and many more we can share with each other.

To start at the beginning : Are words your friend or foe?

When you see a blank page or screen are you filled with fear or are you excited at the challenge.

Does writing words down help you more or in a different way to speaking them?

Everyone is welcome to contribute, first time posters , regulars, people who don't like writing , people who find they go the character limit for the post every time.

PS writing in this context is same as typing , or using voice to text.

I want to look at how words can help you express your thoughts and emotions?

Hello readers and writers ,

thanks Mrs Dools. I like reading letters and hearing another’s voice is so comforting.

I suppose I am still looking for my authentic writing voice.

Quirky

Hi Quirky,

Maybe your writing "voice" adapts and changes depending on where yo are sitting on your life's journey!

Cheers from Dools

greetings ,

Maybe Dools, who knows.

I have a several oops on how to find my authentic writing voice. on some days I can not find my books let alone my voice.

I suppose it is like finding oneself or being yourself it does change and maybe if we stop looking it will find us and our writing voicevwill just naturally evolve.

I can live in hope.

Thanks for your encouragement.

Quirky

Hi Quirky,

So is it a novel you are wanting to write? If so, is it one that is based on your own experiences or something that is fictional or a mixture of both?

Can you write for your own pleasure, enjoy the process and work on making changes once you have had some time of enjoying the experience?

Occasionally I like to get my paints out and have some fun with them. The results may look a little child like and basic, it is the act of painting and adding colour that I enjoy.

Hope you find a way to enjoy the journey, take in advice along, find ways to enhance your writing style and come up with something you are happy with!

Cheers from Dools

hello all,

Mrs Dools you have more an idea that I do.

My partner thinks I should write more and not just blogs etc.

I suppose realistically I would never get published. I have some diaries of my mum written during the war that I would like to to turn into some short stories.

I like writing down my thoughts and have dozens of cheap exercise books half filled with illegible writing and rambling narratives.

Does you painting help when you are down or do you only paint when you fee ok?

Quirky

Do other people find words help you or is it a chore or is it very creative and calming.

I think that some people are just natural creative writers and I get that impression about you Quirky and Dools.

For many of us creative writing can also be an enjoyable means to get things off our chest without taking out the hurt on others, followed by how the mindfulness and other training helps us. We are all unique and have a different way of expressing ourselves.

I love to write but I agree with Quirky that some training on structure can help. I have several books and things that have been written over the years and could easily be turned into a biography or similar.

Irene.

Irene

thanks for your kind words.

I am impressed you have finished books .

Do you think you will ever have any of them published one day?

Quirky

Hello everyone.

just wonder how everyone is going with words and writing.

I thought about the meaning some words have for me but are different from the meaning that others may have. I once used a word that someone else understood in a different way to me. This caused a misunderstanding until I explained my intended meaning.

How many times do our words have different meanings for people and so a misunderstanding can occur.

How can we choose words that will not be misconstrued? Is that possible?

hello all people who like writing

I have noticed on other threads people asking about journaling and using writing to help their mental health.

Have people any tips they can share that work for them.

We have threads here about 30 secs of Happiness, 3 things to be grateful for.

Hello everyone and people reading this for first time or after a long time

I haven't written here for over 6 months.

o much has happened in my life personally and in Australia and the world,

have used words to express what happened to me in the fires and the isolation of covid,

notice that social media wants video recordings of what people have been through.

wonder how man people like me have used a pen and paper , or the computer, to write down their thoughts in last 6 months.

Has it helped at all.

I have found that sharing my writing with others has helped them to understand a little about what I have been feeling.

What writing have you done in last 6 months and has it helped?
