Walking Shoes - Walking and Other Exercise

Hey to anyone reading this.

Last night I had an idea about starting a new thread about exercise especially walking. I am aware that walking is very beneficial for our mental, emotional and physical well being. And by actually doing it....well it can make a huge difference to how we cope with the storms that we face in life.

OK, I am not real good at disciplining myself to walk, and have to really push myself to do it. And sometimes it is even hard to leave this bedroom. Anyway I am not a beginner walker, as I have stuck to sort of a plan before. So I know that it does make me feel somewhat better. But I only stayed on the plan for a couple of months, then gave up.....for whatever reason. So here I am again wanting desperately to not fail this time.

So I guess this thread is for anyone that does walk, anyone that is struggling to walk because of depression or anxiety issues. And anyone else really......

I am unsure of the outcome of all this. But my ideas included: Sharing about things we have found out about exercise especially about walking. Writing down the reasons that one would chose to walk ( like something to help motivate). Being accountable in same way. Sharing about the places where we actually do walk, like the beach, gym, around the block, with the dog, out to the clothesline and back. And any other useful tips that could help others. So here we go......

I went walking out on Breakwall Path. Looking up I noticed the gray clouds. Saw the mist in the port along with a large cargo ship moving out to sea. I noticed the surfers in the rough ocean on the beach side of the path. The waves were coming in quite big there. I heard the chime of the old clock tower. Such a beautiful sound ringing out in the air.

I was hoping it would not rain too much whilst I was out there. It hardly rained at all. Just a very light sprinkle on the way back. I quite like it.

I also went for a walk tonight around our neighbourhood.

Hi Shelll and All,

Thanks for sharing your walks. I need to get back to the beach sometime.

We seem to have constant rain this morning not sure if it will last all day. I had planned to do some gardening today. The rain is lovely, just not inducive for gardening.

Will just have to wait and see how the weather goes. I could walk inthe rain with an umbrella as we don't have much wind here today.

Cheers from Dools

How you going Mrs D?

Did you end up walking with your umbrella? Sorry I don't have many words today.

I went walking on Breakwall Path again early this morning

Went for another walk tonight in the neighbourhood. For around 20 minutes. Heard the birds making a huge amount of noise. There chatter was coming from several groups of large trees. Cute in a way. Maybe cockatoes, don't know.

Hi Shell,

I was trying to remember if I went for a walk yesterday or not! I recall now I had a short walk after a medical appointment. I was 1/2 hour late for the appointment as I had written the time down wrong! Thankfully the person was understanding and managed to fit me in!

I wandered down a pathway created along an old railway track. There is a cutting with pine trees on one side and gum trees on the other. It smelt glorious amongst the pines after the rain.

Beyond the small cutting, there is a vista of vineyards, hills in the distance and a cloudy sky. I saw about 4 cows wandering around an old vineyard, they looked out of place amongst the rows of vines. Large creatures sauntering along.

There were lots of birds as well and I was pleased the multitude of magpies all stayed up in the trees and didn't find a need to swoop me. Maybe their young are old enough now to look after themselves.

I might take a short walk after work late this afternoon. Maybe!

Hope you have an okay kind of day Shelll. I find when life is rough, hoping for an excellent day is a bit of a miracle, so a nice day is okay! Cheers to you and all reading from Dools

That is refreshing for you Mrs D, having a nice person to fit you in for your medical appointment. I know you have had issues of late with other people etc. So yeah that's nice.

Your walk after it sounded like there was much to notice around you. I can imagine the scent of pine trees after the rain. Guessing it was a short walk..

Oh magpies.. We had 2 in our backyard just last week. The baby fledging and the parent. The little one was slightly hovering under the clothes line. He had no tail feathers and could only walk just a little. I went out to have a closer look, then swish. Those parents are very good protectors alright.

Life can get really rough, can't it. The last weeks have been for me. So emotionally draining

Thankyou for sharing about your walk

Hi Shelll and All,

My ankle is a bit sore again. Maybe I should get it checked at the Dr to find out what is going on! I will do some gardening today. It is really windy and chilly out there!

I'm seeing my Mum early this afternoon, takes me nearly 1 1/2 hours to drive there. Might go earlier and have a walk in her region near the river.

Yes, I had a short walk the other day and no energy for a walk yesterday. Felt too exhausted after work to go anywhere. In hindsight a walk would have been refreshing even for a short distance.

Hopefully will get myself organised to day so I do have time for a walk near the river.

Sorry you feel so emotionally drained Shelll. It can be exhausting. Hope you are able to continue with your walking, even if it is for a short distance. Just sitting somewhere and resting in nature can be so beneficial.

Hey Shelll, imagine if pelicans were like magpies, swooping people! I would have to take care when walking near the River where Mum lives.

Take care. Cheers from Dools

Hey Mrs D, I did imagine a pelican swooping.. all I could see was there very large beaks or bills. Did you ever watch Storm Boy that movie?

I really hope you enjoy even driving to your mums place. A walk near the river sounds good.

I am still walking most days. But feel somewhat far away within myself. Emotions may have switched off or something. I don't know.

Take care Mrs D
