Walking Shoes - Walking and Other Exercise

Hey to anyone reading this.

Last night I had an idea about starting a new thread about exercise especially walking. I am aware that walking is very beneficial for our mental, emotional and physical well being. And by actually doing it....well it can make a huge difference to how we cope with the storms that we face in life.

OK, I am not real good at disciplining myself to walk, and have to really push myself to do it. And sometimes it is even hard to leave this bedroom. Anyway I am not a beginner walker, as I have stuck to sort of a plan before. So I know that it does make me feel somewhat better. But I only stayed on the plan for a couple of months, then gave up.....for whatever reason. So here I am again wanting desperately to not fail this time.

So I guess this thread is for anyone that does walk, anyone that is struggling to walk because of depression or anxiety issues. And anyone else really......

I am unsure of the outcome of all this. But my ideas included: Sharing about things we have found out about exercise especially about walking. Writing down the reasons that one would chose to walk ( like something to help motivate). Being accountable in same way. Sharing about the places where we actually do walk, like the beach, gym, around the block, with the dog, out to the clothesline and back. And any other useful tips that could help others. So here we go......

Hi Mrs D and Elizabeth

Hi Shelley, Elizabeth and all reading,

Elizabeth, would some gentle stretching help your muscles? You could ask the physio for some ideas. My physio was able to print out some examples so I would remember them. They do help me when I managed to do them!

How are you both? Life can be a bit of a test at times can't it!

Yesterday I went for a walk up our road. The crops are looking green and lush if not a little short for this time of year due to the lack of rain earlier in the year.

The canola crop is a brilliant yellow, if you have not seen canola, imagine a paddock filled with over sized sour sobs. There are a few gum trees in this paddock so the contrast with the green of the hill behind, the yellow flowers and the blue sky is striking.

Further up the road I was dive bombed by a magpie! On the way back I waved a stick above my head hoping that would deter it, seemed to work.

I didn't see any kangaroos amongst the vines this time, guess they have plenty of grass to eat elsewhere at present. I was surprised to see a small flock of crows or ravens. Usually I only see them individually. There were some pretty parrots, or at least I think they are parrots!

I was only about 10 degrees yesterday, this morning it is even colder so I will need to encourage myself to go out for a walk soon before I need to get ready for work. I will wear layers of clothes.

It must be hard for all of you who are unable to go out walking. I hope you find alternative ways to exercise.

Kind regards to you all from Dools

How you you going Mrs D, did you end up going for a walk before work?

I have never seen a canola crop nor a sour sop. But I am curious now and will most likely look it up. There are not many crops around here. There is flat ground though, mostly that has cows on it.

Those magpies can surely swip at you.

I am hoping to go out for a walk in a couple of hours time.

Okay I am out at the beach, just sitting in the car actually. So much sadness and perhaps anger I feel in my emotions. Part of me wants to just get out and walk, another part wants to drive a little bit further and buy chocolate and stuff myself with it. Another part just wants to cry and hit out at things. So fed up with this stupid stupid life.

Well I ended up walking. I walked on the beach. I am glad I did. I liked the feel of the sunshine on my face, and hearing the waves. The waves were really coming up close to the sand dunes, so much so I decided to walk up into the dunes.

I walked up a sand dune and then down it. Some were quite steep. I kept walking up and down a few of them. Looking down in the sand were tracks from some animal. I don't know what animal.

I found a spot near the top of a dune and sat a while watching the waves come in. I had never really walked on the dunes before. Not sure why.

I walked to the end of them and then down some to the sand closer to the ocean.

I noticed 2 sufers out in the waves. And I am pretty sure that was their dog tied up to a pole. The dog looked okay and comfy. And was nestled in a tiny bean bag pillow thing. It just was barking every now and then.

I walked up the sandy hill to the breakwater path and walked along that back to the car.

Hi All,

If you're not keen for rigorous exercise at the moment like I, just search 'stretch workout' on YouTube. There are some great videos. And I feel so refreshed after doing the stretch workouts.

Regards,

Doz

Went back to the Physio for mor treatment. Now have my back/shoulders tape to keep it in position. I was given 1 simple gentle exercise to help my neck/shoulders & have to massage it using a spiky ball. Otherwise no upper body exercise. I can walk or do lower body exerciseas that won't hurt my neck.

went for a short walk & my grandson rode past followed soon by his brother & my son. Not allowed to spend any time together so very brief interaction saying hi before they headed off on their ride.

Hi Everyone,

Shelley I am pleased you were able to go for a walk in the end. Exploring the dunes would have been very interesting. Our local beaches all have devastation and erosion happening so access to the dunes is denied. I do like to have a look over the fence though and see what critters have left their marks. One day it had been windy and the grasses had blown against the sand making an interesting pattern.

Friends have invited me to join them for a walking tour of an out door art exhibition. I might go to that town early and have a walk there before hand as I don't think the art trail is very long.

Elizabeth I hope the taping is helpful and successful. Good thing you are still able to walk. I had my back taped and strapped once. Trying to get my shoes on and off was very interesting!

Doz thanks for the idea on where to get new ideas for stretches and work out ideas. Like Elizabeth, guess we all need to be aware if we have any medical limitations to consider. Our bodies soon tell us when something is not right!

Yesterday I walked down a different road in our small town. Thankfully the magpies in that region were happy to just perch in the trees and sing, not swoop!

Cheers all from Dools

Hello Elizabeth, Doz and Mrs D

I am struggling to know what to write. But wanted to say a hello anyway.

I went walking on the beach with my sister today.
