Walking Shoes - Walking and Other Exercise

Hey to anyone reading this.

Last night I had an idea about starting a new thread about exercise especially walking. I am aware that walking is very beneficial for our mental, emotional and physical well being. And by actually doing it....well it can make a huge difference to how we cope with the storms that we face in life.

OK, I am not real good at disciplining myself to walk, and have to really push myself to do it. And sometimes it is even hard to leave this bedroom. Anyway I am not a beginner walker, as I have stuck to sort of a plan before. So I know that it does make me feel somewhat better. But I only stayed on the plan for a couple of months, then gave up.....for whatever reason. So here I am again wanting desperately to not fail this time.

So I guess this thread is for anyone that does walk, anyone that is struggling to walk because of depression or anxiety issues. And anyone else really......

I am unsure of the outcome of all this. But my ideas included: Sharing about things we have found out about exercise especially about walking. Writing down the reasons that one would chose to walk ( like something to help motivate). Being accountable in same way. Sharing about the places where we actually do walk, like the beach, gym, around the block, with the dog, out to the clothesline and back. And any other useful tips that could help others. So here we go......

Hey Shelley,

Yes my job requires a lot of being on my feet and climbing and such, plus chasing after my kiddies too 😍. But I have talked to my psycologist and in the morning I'm going to go on a quick walk when I can to burn some excess nervous energy, and get my head in a good place!

Lara loves pats from anyone, she is very affectionate, she is a staffy! We are currently both curled up in bed!

I always need hugs too Shelley, so you are very welcome!

Hi Elizabeth and Bluey

Thankyou so very much for responding to my comments on 'agoraphobia' (which you know is just another 'leaf' off the anxiety tree....

Bluey....the anxiety is tricky....absolutely...and I didnt mean it's easy to overcome.....any recovery whether physiologically or psychological takes time and effort.....

I have never ever been called an 'inspiration' before and you guys have made my day...Big Time!

Paul 🙂

(Woof!)

Hey Shelley

Thankyou for caring and your response..and helpful tips too

The ipod is a great idea...I use my Sony Experia with 3AW talkback when I am walking and it does help. I just have to stop 'internalizing' when I walk...

My GP made it simple a few months ago and I will quote " Paul....does it really matter if you cant get around a small area?.....Just walk up and down the same street and try not to 'think' so much"

Elizabeth

You have a stack of determination when it comes to walking and NIce1....If I may ask.....do you have a garden?

Kindly Yours

Paul

Woof!

Thank you Paul for your comments. I have a garden which is a blessing & a curse. I find it hard to look after in summer due to the heat. Me & hot weather don't go well together. As a result it looks a bit messy at the moment. I have a grapevine which is currently providing tons of lovely grapes. My peach tree is also producing well but it is a battle managing the birds.

I am finding reporting here is helping me to keep on track with my walking. I was doing really well but have fallen into a hole so it is taking every bit of motivation to keep going.
yesterday & today I only did a shorter walk. I am going to the lake this afternoon to swim. I've told my husband so he can nag me till I go. Hopefully soon I can get to a point where I don't need his nagging to do what I know will be good for me!!!!

Morning Elizabeth

Nice to hear about your garden...grapes...peaches....yummm. I do agree with you about the heat...Working or walking in high temperatures can be counterproductive...the enjoyment falls away for me....and not good for my dog either.

Reporting on here does work for me too....Its a great post and also keeps me in check with my thinking. Falling into that hole is always a pain Elizabeth..Its like being stuck in quicksand sometimes but your mates on here (and your bubby of course) will always throw you rope and drag you out 🙂

The swim....nice idea....you always have many good ideas Elizabeth

Grapes....give me some next time in the Cafe....yum!

Hey everyone, good news!  Today I managed to force myself to attend a Pilates Class.  I try to go once a week (Its only held on Thursday mornings) but I havent been for a month or more.  Several reasons why I havent been going, one of which is work, the other being a lack of motivation.  Anyway I'm feeling quite proud of myself for making the effort today.   ( - :

Paul - I agree about not feeling like doing any exercise in hot weather.  I usually just shut down when it gets too hot.  Thats why Pilates Class was good today, all air conditioned and fans etc.  And not in the hot sun.  Although it isnt that hot here at the moment.  I think it will be very hot over the weekend though.

Skye - Since Lara loves her pats, please give her one from me too.  And a friendly lick from my girl Holly.  She gets on well with other dogs.  In fact one of our neighbours has a staffy called Buddy, and she gets on really well with him.

Elizabeth - We also have a lovely big grapevine, but nothing left now.  All finished about a month ago.  But we do have a couple of mango trees which have a few mangos just starting to ripen.  And a fig tree with figs starting to colour up.  Gotta watch them really closely though because as soon as the birds spot any colour, they're onto them in a flash!  We do have lemons, limes, oranges and grapefruit all starting to fruit.  Persimmons are a little way off yet, as are our macadamias.  We have lots of room for fruit trees.  Unfortunately beating birds and bats is our problem.

Happy exercising everyone .............. whatever form that takes (work or play).

Hello Sherie

Good on you for choosing to go to the Pilates class.

Three cheers for you today.

Hip Hip Hooray... Hip Hip Hooray... Hip Hip Hooray!

Thanks Shelley,

I usually enjoy it once I'm there.  Its just a matter of finding the energy and motivation to actually turn up.

Thanks "walking group" for helping me to find the motivation needed.

Shell, I've been reading your interesting posts about your walks on the beach, including some evening walks with your son.  It sounds lovely.  Wish I could go with you, I love walking on the beach at night.    ( - :

Sherie,

Lara loved her pat and lick too, she loves other dogs!

How are you feeling today?

Skye

Well I managed a shorter walk this morning. Felt tired & sore so needed to walk to get moving. This thread is at least giving me the motivation to go even when tempted to give up.

I made it to the lake- a week since last time so at least I'm on target for that goal. The water was nice but I went earlier to avoid the traffic jam I encountered last time. Unfortunately this meant the sun was higher which meant having to deal with constant thoughts of sunburn- I had sunscreen on my face & rash vest but this doesn't stop the thoughts. Sunburn is linked to the original trauma so this fear is a trigger. I started crying as soon as I got back into shallow water so I could stand. Thoughts of 'not being good enough' and feeling overwhelmed trying to do things on my own since my husband can't help do to his condition. He wants to help but it is more trouble than its worth as I have to watch everything he does since he can't see. I don't like to say much to him as I don't want to make him feel worse about his condition.

I don't know why I have gone downhill as I was doing well & feeling more positive before falling in this hole.
