Dear All~

What this place is for:
This thread is a tool, a resource, and also I guess a dash of entertainment.

I’ve found that when life is grim that sometimes thoughts of past happiness can create a chink of light in the grey overwhelming press of down. They can help occupy the mind with lighter reflections.

With that in view I invite people to set down a brief passage describing some happy event they look back to with fondness and peace.

They - and others too - can then return to it when they feel the need to glean a little warmth.

It is not a place for gloomy or dire tales, those can go elsewhere.

What to do:
Just set out, as simply as you like, your recollection of some past experience that means something good to you, something you enjoyed, something from safe times.

It can be, like my story below, anything – from an account of visiting grandparents to simply cooking and eating a melted-cheese sandwich in a favorite kitchen – you get to choose.

How to do it:
Write. Write enough so someone else can feel the mood, know what happened, find the goodness. (stop at 2,500 characters please!)

Grammar, syntax, spelling, punctuation are not compulsory, just write as you can – the only important thing is the content - not literary merit. Short or long - it does not matter.

I hope you enjoy, contribute and find a little distraction here when you need it.

Hey Doolhof

Great memory. It made me think a lot about my childhood. I don't have many of the great sibling memories, but I do have one. My family had a particular spot that we would go for a beach day called curramundi lake. Each time we would go a large sand bar would move back and forth across the mouth of the river. On this time the chanel was deep agains a rock wall the ran alomg the far side to where we park. The family set themselves up, and my brother and i grabbed our boggie boards and took off across the sand flats to the chanel. We woulld jump in and ride the tide as it ran out swimming to shore before the current dragged us out into the surf. I hind sight it was probably quite dangerous, but fun.

We would trek back along the rocky shore as far as we could then jump back in for another go. While we were going back for the 4th or 5th time we stopped on a smaal beach between the coffe rocks with our feet in the water. as we talked i noticed a weird sensation and peered down through the water to see little see through shrimp, playing and nibbling on my feet.We chuckled and played with them gently for a while before moving on.

It was some of the only times I truely shared a good moment with my brother.

Ah MC - that sparked a memory of mine!

We too had a tidal lake about 15 minutes drive from home, and it too has a current that runs out to the sea. When the kids were young, I would pile them, the dogs, and all of the boogie boards into the car and make the trip.

To get to the best part, you would have to wade across the deep current to the other side. I would start with a couple of the younger kids hanging onto their boards for dear life and deposit them safely onto the other side. I would then wade back and grab the next two kids and repeat the journey, Finally I'd go back for the dogs, both of whom were too scared to swim the channel by themselves!

Finally, altogether again, we would run a couple of hundred metres up the beach and launch ourselves with gay abandon into the current. The dogs would run along side on the sand as the current gently propelled us along. Rounding the bend the speed would pick up, and finally, at the last possible moment, we would kick to the safety of the shore and run back to our starting point, the dogs hot on our heals! It was great summer fun (and a great weight loss remedy!). Again and again we would repeat the process. If I wanted more exercise I would drag the kids against the current and then launch ourselves again and start all over.

Exhausted, the sun starting to set on the horizon, the wind starting to chill us to the bones, we would reverse the process and head back to the car, wet, sandy, and smiles plastered firmly across faces. Home, a bath and a quick dinner, (or even better, fish and chips from the beachside takeaway!), and we all collapse thankfully into bed, only to repeat the journey all over again the next day. What a blissful summer it was.....

Lovely memories! Thanks for sharing.

Makes me want to head to the beach or the river tomorrow>

Too tired to think of a happy memory right now!

Cheers all from Mrs. D.

Two years ago, about this time of year, hubby,me and youngest daughter then 14,went shooting at our friends huge property near Lightning Ridge.

We had our usual backed dinner in the open fire and we were just kicking back, when there began an enormous light,it got bigger and bigger,it was massive and beautiful,we had know idea what it was ,maybe a falling star. It wasn't until the next day We learnt it was an old satellite that had crashed into earth about 500ks from us. It was priceless and don't think to ever see it again.

Later

One time when my parents were staying with me, they wanted to sit outside and look at the stars. We have a couple of lounge chairs outside. It was a coolish evening so I put blankets and pillows on the chairs then more blankets on top to keep them warm.

I set up the coffee table, took them cups of hot chocolate and biscuits and told then they were welcome to stay there as long as they liked. My parents were laughing like a couple of children.

That was a beautiful moment and an extremely happy memory for me to hold on to.

Thanks for the prompt about the night sky Later!

Cheers all from Mrs. D.

A happy memory has came to my mind. It is one that I experienced here on Beyond Blue. It was in the " thread killer" thread starting by Robbie ( Gruffurd).

A continuing story was started where you write a few sentences leaving the end of the sentence sort of hanging.ie you really did not know what was going to happen next. And one could change the story into another direction.

The story started out about someone actually on Beyond Blue, we later checked with her to see if that was okay with her. She was all cool about it. But her character left and other characters were brought on in to the story. There were bits about a donkey, pirates, a village market, the moon, a woman called "Lady of the dishes". The story somehow evolved into a few key characters mainly two little adventuress children. The children sort of travelled in this suitcase. The suitcase was very large inside like a home. The suitcase with the children inside it , plus any other stray folks they picked up on the way speed away and landed in other places. One such place was the moon, and another one was a fair. There were other places as well. There is even a recipe of a biscuit or something else that was edible in the story.

I really enjoyed adding my sentences and often a whole small paragraph. It was fun and I enjoyed the story itself. It didn't really finish with an ending. So yeah the whole experience was a happy one for me.

Hi Shell,

I seem to recall that thread. Do you know if it is still active? If not you can certainly start it up again if you can find it. Mention it here if you recall the title and the story may take on a new life!

Cheers form Mrs. D.

How are you going Mrs D?

yeah the story is in the "killer thread". It is still a relatively active thread. It is that thread were you try to be the last one to post. However the story is somewhere amongst the whole thread going over several pages. I don't know what page it would be on either. And Robbie ( Gruffurd) well I have not seen him around for a long time, he was one of the main authors. I do recall you adding a sentence or two in the story as well. Way cool .....

Hi Shell,

I'm doing okay thanks. Yes I am not sure what has happened to Rob. Now you mentioned it I have not seen his name around for a while. Then again he and I may be connecting with different threads.

Speaking of threads, when I worked in aged care, there was a lady of about 100 who still liked to crochet. When I had a quiet night, I would go to her room and help her untangle her wool ready for her next project. She liked packet tomato soup, so we would sit there drinking the soup untangling wool chatting.

I had many happy moments working there!
