SLEEP

Hi All,

In the past there may have been threads on sleep and how to improve our quality of sleep.

I am starting this thread up and hope to include past thread titles.

For some of us sleep is a real issue, the more we can learn about it the better informed we will be.

Funny stories on weird places you have fallen asleep are welcome as well.

For me, I had just moved house and was very busy getting everything organised. Friends invited me to the drag races. I was so tired and exhausted that I sat down, leant against the fence right near the starting line and fell asleep for most of the evening.

Hope to read some of your stories and tips.

Cheerio for now, from Mrs. Dools

😆 It worked. Got to about 600.

Oh yeah hear ya Grandy about getting mixed up, sure I lost a hundred here and there 😄 Dools I had you in mind with your head hurting ☺ at 700.

I did wake again but went from 660 each time. I definately wasn't going to get to sleep otherwise if so would've been long time later.

I think the challenge is a positive but not to focus on that. What I like is it takes our mind off other things for a while too.

3's will be easier with practise.

My thoughts are ones are too easy, no offense anyone, maybe too much brain stimulation where 3's it's easier in parts, although at least by ones it's distraction. Grandy I like how you worked a way around it.

There's another I'll try and find for later.

This is a very important thread. If we can find ways to sleep we'd be able to handle our problems a lot easier with less stress more energy and strength.

Sleep well lovelies 😴

Best to you too Doolsy 🤗

Hi Grandy, DB and All,

Yes, sleep is important. I was with a friend today and we went a chemist that sells a huge amount of herbal pills and potions. I saw so many things that are supposed to aid sleep. Maybe it would be advisable to ask a Dr what is safe to use if taking prescription medications, ask the chemist or a naturopath perhaps.

I was very tired while we were walking around the shopping centre, I saw a display bed and thought how comfortable and cosy it looked all made up! I told my friend I could quite easily have climbed into that bed for a snooze!

A Dr told me an afternoon snooze was okay as long as you don't actually fall asleep and you don't stay in bed for longer than half an hour. That is not a snooze...that is a micro nap to me! Ha. Ha.

I usually fall asleep quickly, I just wake up a couple of hours later and have trouble falling asleep again, more due to aches and pains than any negative thoughts.

Hope you all find ways to increase the quality of your sleep. Ear plugs are helping me too!

Cheers all from Dools

Hi Dools

Thankyou again for the helpful thread topic

  • Switching off mobile phones/tablets/ipads/laptops at least an hour prior to bed is always a smart idea
  • Avoiding overly negative/toxic people (if possible) will also help us have a peaceful sleep
  • Eating after 7pm will make our mind and body more stimulated which we dont need

Just my 2cents worth 🙂

Paul

Hi Paul,

Thanks for your comments and suggestions.

A friend of my husband's likes to have a cup of hot milk every night.

Years ago I remember trying a milk drink called Horlicks. I am not sure if it is still made and don't recall if it actually worked for me or not.

There are a lot of herbal teas that are supposed to help with sleep. Does anyone use them?

Cheers all from Dools

Hi Dools (and a wave to all reading)

I used to drink chamomile tea to help with sleep. It helped somewhat, whether that was just the warmth or the tea itself I'm not sure. I used to put a little bit of honey in it to sweeten it up too.

I still drink it sometimes as well as decaffeinated black tea. I make sure that anything I drink after 7pm is decaffeinated so it doesn't affect my sleep. One thing I was surprised to learn a little while ago was that black tea has more caffeine in it than coffee! I used to always have a cup of tea at night!

I tried all of the "sleep" herbal tablets and teas etc but because of my sleep disorder none of them ever worked. If you have a sleep disorder then some otc remedies won't work depending on what your sleep issue is. That's why I always recommend getting a sleep study done. I spent from my teens to my late 30s trying all sorts of stuff before getting a diagnosis and learning exactly what will help me. The few things I do now help far more than any of the sleep tablets etc ever did.

I hope everyone has a good day!

Hi everyone, I tried the counting backwards by 3's again last night and it worked! This time whenever I made a mistake I just took a deep breath and kept on counting rather than stressing about counting incorrectly and having to start over again. I can remember getting into the lower 800's and then I obviously fell asleep 🙂

Hello Fred, Lici,Dools,Paul, Deebi and all.

I keep making mistakes with counting backwards and discovered...I cannot continue unless I correct myself...but I ended up getting into the 700s. But apon waking started counting again...from 10000..it works, to get me to sleep, but constant waking is a pain..How do I stay asleep when I get to sleep? any ideas?

Lici, I used to drink a lot of chamomile tea before bed..with honey as well, mit was not a very nice drink..I still drink it today but not as much...I think a hot chocolate drink works just as well but it's more yummier...

Hoping everyone gets a good sleep tonight..

Grandy...💐🌹🥀

Hi Everyone,

LICI thanks for sharing your experiences with us. Did you find it difficult getting in to have a sleep study done? I might try the Camomile tea again. I do like to have a hot drink some evenings, especially when it is cold. I too was surprised about the level of caffeine in green tea!

FRED it is good to read that the counting helped you. I ended up finding the pattern in the numbers as you count back from 3. I haven't kept at it from 1000 as it just started to annoy me! Ha. Ha. Glad it worked for you though!

GRANDY I am a bit like you with the counting, maybe it is a case of once I start something I want to finish it! Maybe we just need to tell ourselves it is okay to not finish the counting down, the point is to distract the mind and allow ourselves to relax in what we are doing.

My psychologist told me that when you wake up, you should get up if you have not fallen back to sleep after 10 -15 minutes. You are supposed to read a book, do some knitting, light housework or something tedious so you feel tired and want to fall back to sleep again.

I try to think of pleasant things and see if that helps me to fall asleep again or I do read for a while, but not an exciting book that keeps me turning the pages until the sun comes up! Ha. Ha.

Hopefully we all find different ways to help us sleep more effectively! The hot chocolate does sound nice!

Cheers from Dools

Hello Dools,

Thank you I will give that a try, I've been sleeping not even an hour at a time, then waking up again...Immediately my thoughts are on something that is upsetting me, and tears and then I manage to divert my mind back to be able to start the counting again, then back around in the circle I go. Asleep again only to wake up again...

Tonight when I wake I might get up and do something physical. maybe some housework then a cuppa and try again...

Grandy...
